It's an iconic opening for a reason. Dragonball was comfy was fuck when it wasn't just slinging bigger beams at the other guy, which is mostly why I hate Super.
As for his designs, I think it's mostly because he has very little variation in his characters. He also deteriorated a lot and his coloring went to absolute shit, but I think I'm one of the few people who actually cares about that.

well how else would you have showed off trunks's power? fans new who frieza was so there was no need to take up time to explain freiza's power level if he were an entirely new villain instead. And since we already knew who frieza was the impact of this complete stranger (who can also go super saiyan) killing him so easily (along with frieza's men) while our newly acquired super saiyan goku struggled made the entire conflict all the more greater.

i personally saw the entire encounter as basically a retelling of the namek saga but extremely condensed. a sign that greater, more terrifying things are to come

Generally, yes, but with how the medium generally is, why would someone go out of their way to make entirely new faces for characters when the things they wear, the colors they have, etc all already make up what they look like? It'd look uncanny if every character had a different facial structure considering what anime looks like. Templates have and always will be a thing in all forms of animation and entertainment.

My guy, Gohan and Vegeta toyed with Cell out of overconfidence. Goku gave up on the fight with Frieza because he was defeated and he's dumb enough to think he'd learn a lesson knowing that Goku will come fuck him up if he ever starts trouble again, and then after that there's no reason at all to think that Goku wouldnt think Frieza died on Namek.

Think about it, he knew Frieza was done for after he got chopped in half. He couldn't count on him being enough of a tank to survive another ki blast plus a fucking planet exploding.

Goku did nothing wrong and no one suffered for his actions.

Why does Toriyama feel the need to get involved with the series? Why not just let them do their own shit and figure out what is and isn't good? That'd put a fire under Toei's asses so as to not have the defense of "Toriyama wrote it".
