I've had this stuff on my disc for ages, but I've never rly cared about. And I was wrong, it's damn nice game. So, while I'm while I'm browsing some tips, Do you guys have any begginer's advices for me? Also ftl thred mayby.
Faster Than Light
remember to ignore distress calls involving giant spiders
ok, cheers user
So it's always bullshit call and there are no spiders? I've never seen this message, I've just left my first sector. Speaking of which, should I go Zoltan or Rockman next? I've read that Rockmen are fucked up as aboarding enemy, so Zoltan then?
Gather as much scrap as you can and try to build some sort of specialization with synergies. Finding a balance between defense and offense is also important, since you don't want to get screwed by pulse weapons, but at the same time need more and more power to get past the enemy shields. There are different ways to manage certain situations, depending on your load-out and upgrades.
Invisibility is pretty strong, especially during the late game, since you can doge missiles with it
Also what this user said unless you have something to deal with them
Should I uprage oxygen systems fast or should I left this for later on? Also I couldn't find any avalible crew for entire sector, that worries me a little bit.
The difference between hostile and civilian sectors is the amount of traders and enemy encounters, so it's usually worth it to get into fights early on to gather more scrap. Zoltan have energy shields which are pretty annoying, since it usually gives them enough time to charge their missiles/bombs. Rock should be manageable this early on
Depending on your layout, oxygen can usually be ignored for the most part. You can upgrade it once without putting more energy into it though. This way the system has 2 health bars and can be damaged without getting destroyed and you can put the energy into something more useful.
>no gay sex with hats
channel Yea Forumsirgins plz.
cheers, I rly needed that info. So, into rock sector we go.
Looks peacefull so far, I wonder if they wanna trade with me in that shop since they're hostile.
Nah Mantis's are most likely to board you. Rockmen tend to use missle based weapons which will bypass your shield. You want to upgrade your engines a lot and divert power to them just before a missle hits if possible. Mind you it's only the 2nd sector so you shouldn't be in too much trouble.
Basic gist with the giant spider distress call. Don't go and help them unless you have a cloning bay. There's like a 9/10 chance one of your crewmembers will be eaten.
Also you're going to loose the game, a lot, and find yourself starting over again. That's not your fault it's how the game's designed. Even if you loose you've either learnt something new or you've unlocked a new ship or new ship layout that can completely change the experience. Also the last boss is kinda bullshit but manageable once you've faced him (and lost) a couple of times. Don't be discouraged - it's easy to loose but the game's really short, a full run will only take 1 and a half to 2 hours. It's all about replaying it over and over again and finding new things each time.
Wow, I managed to misspell 'lose' three different times.
You're only in real trouble with shops in the rebel controlled sectors. Also how many fucking tabs do you have open?
don't worry, you've been very helpfull anyway :* (no homo, that's manly kiss in the cheek)
>3 soulless silicon based lifeforms
>1 soulless energy based lifeform
>2 organic races, one is a giant bloodthirsty insect and the other is a giant slug which can read your mind
>the pro-human rebels are in the wrong
You are the bad guy in this game.
18, and thanks
btw. it's 18 on this high-end rig, so it ain't problem (picrelated)
Biggest tip I can give you is that the cloaking bay is one of the most useful upgrades. It's 150 scrap (? I think - it's been a while since I played it and it might be different on other difficulty levels) and costs a pretty penny to upgrade it (plus it's quite possible to never run across a shop with it in stock) but it's one of the most useful items in game. You can defeat the final boss without a cloak but I wouldn't dare try the face the Rebel Mothership without it until you really know what you're doing.
Flak Cannon 1 is also one of the most reliably useful weapons. You can use it to dramatically reduce shields and if you time your other shots right a flak burst can be the opening to make some serious damage.
However due to the random nature of each FTL run I can't recommend any particular layout as the weapons and things you discover will be different every time. Experiment with everything because after several runs you should have got to grips with most of the games systems depending on what you pick up along the way.
Consider carefully which sectors to jump into so that your loadout will give you an advantage.
If you have a lot of drones/missile weapons, Engi sectors will fuck you up. If you have a defence drone, you can walk through a Rock sector without a care.
Every other sector has their various intricacies so pay attention and learn the best approaches.
To keep going with weapons advice I would recommend you don't use the 'auto' option. This can completely disrupt the rhythm you need to use to take down bigger enemies. For instance if you have a flak cannon fire it first, wait a couple of seconds and then right before the flak hits the enemy's shield fire off a volley of lasers at their weapons systems. Or if you don't have a flak cannon fire a missile at their shields and then target weapons with lasers. Or if you have a laser weapon that fires 3 shots at once you could use that to wittle down an enemies shields before then firing off everything else at their weapons systems.
And that's just advice for the most basic weapons you can find. Main point: make sure targeting enemy weapon's system is top priority most of the time. You don't want them to fuck up your hull - you need it to get to the end.
Also engines and the piloting system are connected but targetting the piloting system is sure to get you more results. If a ship is charging up its FTL drive target the piloting system first - it's almost always weaker and easier to damage/destroy. As the game goes on enemy engines tend to get more power and take a lot more hits to fully destroy. The piloting system is always weaker.
>To keep going with weapons advice I would recommend you don't use the 'auto' option.
Right, good I found this particular tip bit ealier. I'm waiting until blaster takes shields down and then I may fire one of my pricy missiles.
Thanks for all your advices guys, you're rly being very helpfull
Targetting piloting/engines is incredibly useful tactically. Once one of those systems are disabled your enemy can no longer dodge anything. Also upgrade your own engines, piloting system and reactor, you'll have more of a chance of dodging incoming attacks. You may have to divert power from some subsystems though right beforehand.
Make liberal use of the space-bar pause function. Right before another volley hits you divert all the power you can into engines (or shields if you need to). Like turn off oxygen for a few seconds if you need to - then immediately turn it back on once the danger's passed.

Game is based if you get the mod that gets rid of the stupid "Rebels constantly advancing" crap. Otherwise, it's nice for a few games but gets boring.
It goes without saying to always get these games for steep discount since you never know when Steam is going to close shop.
are you sure? well, mayby you're right
try upgrading systems once just to give them a “buffer” even if unpowered, includes subsystems, especially piloting. Even if you’ll never use the auto pilot it means it won’t be destroyed with a 1 dmg shot, needs to take 2 , or 3
Also if your ship is on fire they will eat hull damage when they break to 0 hp, when system breaks from 2 hp to 1 it does no hull dmg
Fucking chrome
yup, sometimes I wonder why this shit is still working properly on my potato
Beam weapons are my favorite but I find they're not that effective against the mothership, they can do good hull damage but don't hit hard enough to knock out the multiple weapon pods
This is like my 5th most played game on steam with 450 hours, behind a couple football manager versions that combine to have 5000 hours, CS source and HOi4. Just in front of Stellaris.
Tips:
Blue options are almost always good. Unless you're a one engi crew in the engi virus event.
Until you've crippled their shields, never use the autofire options while learning the game. You generally want a weapon that will drop their shields, then a weapon that will do damage to the system & hull. Time your attacks.
Just stay in beginner easy mode to start with. If giant spiders show up and you don't have a blue option then run away. Flak + Lasers are a simple good combination of weapons.
Sector Types to Avoid: Civilian if you're already well equipped & repaired, Rock if you don't have anti-missile drones or cloaking, Zoltan if you have weak weapons, Mantis if you're low on manpower, I never like going into Nebulas.
As you get more advanced your goal will be more about equipping the ship for the final battle more than dealing with the regular sectors, it's a small but important distinction.
I always look to get level 2 shields asap, engines up to about level 4 and piloting to level 2. You also need better weapons, and hopefully an anti-missile drone system or a cloak.
Hacking is extremely powerful in Advanced Edition (it can drop level 4 shields to zero at max power, or kill their evasion), but it has limitations as you have to fire a hack drone and they can be shot down.
Unlocking new ships is a fun way to improve your experience at the game, and then give you more stuff to play with.
Pause a lot.
The 'minor' subsystems like doors, sensors, oxygen & medbay can be life savers in certain situations. Don't neglect them. Doors particularly.
>Get used to dying. A lot. Especially on the higher difficulties.
I've been playing this for ages and only have a handful of wins at the hardest difficulty.
So far I like these boost lasers. Should I have one weapon shooting series to removing multiple shield's layers (and then missile straight in the engine)?
You've got it backwards - missiles and bombs already ignore shields. Shoot a missile straight into their shield control then hit their weapons with your laser.
I guess, I should. Also cheers, bro.
>missiles and bombs already ignore shields
ooh, that's some tip, cheers
As someone who has played video games for over 20 years, I'm happy to say FTL is my favorite game of all time.
With that being said, half the fun is figuring shit out.
The only advice I'd give that doesn't spoil the fun is missiles go through shields, cloaking very powerful, and don't be afraid to go into manual control once you learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the various weapons
Good ships to unlock early on are the Kestrel, Mantis and Zoltan B types.
The most RNG dependent (I hesitate to say "bad" because you can win with any ship in the game) ships in the game are the Engi B, Slug B and Rock A.
A really good mod that doesn't interfere with the game itself is the Better Planets and Backgrounds mod.

You might want to install slipstream mod manager as well while you're at it.
subsetgames.com
I also use the Extended Pursuit Indicator X5, it gives you a better idea of where the enemy fleet is going to end up, since it's not RNG based you're just getting better information, saves on guessing where the enemy fleet is going to be.

Which is the ship with the artillery cannon or whatever it's called.. that's my jam
Use a teleporter to kill the crew of the ship, you'll get more loot that way, and even chances at rarer loot like crew members and guns.
If you don't have one, just burn the enemy ship until the fire uses up all the oxygen and they suffocate.
Cloaking and hacking is the way to win.
>Cloaking
Cloaking can save you from random bullshit, missiles and even boarding.
Enemy ship hit you through 4 shields and max engines? Random fires fucked you up? Getting pelted by asteroids? Cloak and repair.
Boarders on your ship? Cloak and kill them, they can't teleport away when you're cloaked.
>Hacking
Hacking is very versatile. It's one weakness are defense drones. You can get pass them if you have the special augment or use simple trick. First fire missiles or flak cannons, than use hacking. That way enemy drones will target incoming projectiles instead of your hacking tool.
Hack shields to burst down opponents, this turns even shittiest weapons good.
Hacking weapons combined with cloaking allows you to become immortal.
When facing weak ships hack oxygen, wait for it to drain, then damage it. Now enemy crew have to get through hacked doors, repair the system at half speed and once they done simply hack it again. Easy money.
Hack the med bay with enemies in it if you feel like being cruel.

What is the worst ship? And why it's stealth B?
Engi B is worse. It has so many drawbacks it's not even a contest.
>high potential to get rekt by boarding
>events can kill your run
>1 engine power, will get destroyed by missiles & bombs
>3 drones that do nothing either defensively or offensively against ships
>only 3 drone slots to begin with, so you can't even add a single extra drone without having to waste/sell one of the sys rep drones
>heavy ion is awful, heavy laser barely useful
>zero manning bonuses or XP beyond piloting until you find new crew
>only have two square medbay, awful in mid-late game.
>no sensors
At least the stealth B starts with 3 crew, one being a zoltan, it has sensors, and a cloak and a heavy hitting weapon. It's even questionable if the Stealth B is weaker than the Stealth C.
>warp to a fucking place where you suddenly get raped by solar flares
>lose every time
Game is unfair random fucking bullshit and isn't worth playing.
I mean with all the poor sods that surrender and get reduced to space dust so I can harvest their ship's corpse how can you not be?
What makes ftl so good?
Engi B is bad but if you can reach the shop you can simply sell all your drones and an augment, buy a crew member and a defence drone if you're lucky. After that Engi B becomes slightly worst Engi A.
Stealth B is much more RNG focused. You either get destroyed in sector 1 or you win the game. It has a very weak engine so even with cloak you can get hit and if your weapon gets damaged before it fires you lose the game.
>95% of the game is a boring slog going through the motions and praying for RNGesus
woah.. so this is the power of... roguelikes
As first user said, don't fuck with giant spiders.
Be prepared to lose - I played 40 hours before actually beating the flagship for the first time. Burst Laser Mk II is basically the best weapon in the original game (I haven't done as much with advanced edition), so if you see a BL MkII, buy it.
I already have it for some reason, I think I've had it from beginning. I'll remember tip about these spiders.
>get the mantis ship type b
>4 (F O U R) teleport bays
>go around emptying every single enemy ship in the game of it's crew
>get some bio-lasers for good measure
That was probably my most fun run.
>Get clone bay
>Drown your enemies in endless waves of bugs
Well yeah. It's basically a giant sjw power fantasy, in which you kill one giant orange threat and all evil white males across the galaxy surrender and welcome diversity.
Missiles ignore shields (except Zoltan shield). But what you CAN do with missile setup is target piloting/engine with your laser to reduce enemy dodge (if you have extra shots that can damage the ship after hitting the shield, say a Burst Laser II vs 1 layer of shield).
For oxygen, medbay and piloting it can be helpful to upgrade them early by one point as there are events with better outcome if those are upgraded. Thats if you don't really need the scrap.
>I never like going into Nebulas.
Nebulas can be nice when having a decent ship with a lot unused energy, good shields and a lot fuel.
Get teleporter and bugs
Capturing vessels give way more
Also really micromanage the air vents with lost of pauzing if you wanna win most runs
And of course channel your inner jew like in all rogueliites
If you get boarded in an event, open all airlocks except for medbay and put all your people into medbay. The AI will freak out and fight you in your medbay, which they will never win. If you have an extra guy, put him into the doors room which will buff your doors one free point. Then watch and laugh as the enemy desperately try to escape your rooms with no oxygen.
The crew A.I have a
Autofire is essential for gattiling cannon, since it's main perk is firing faster than a shield can possibly recharge once it's fully spun up.
>high potential to get rekt by boarding
Upgrade doors, vent all oxygen apart from your pilot and any crew members (The guys that drain oxygen are a priority with this ship, i forget the name), micromanage airlocks so boarders are permenently without air, once they start suffocating they try to reach a room with oxygen over destroying a system.
Use your drone to run interference as they HAVE to kill it before they can break a door down.
No oxygen also prevents fires from spreading.
Your biggest problems with this method is if your drone bay gets hit, so beef it up a little asap and the second problem being boarded by an oxygen drainer.
Ignore that top bit, was going to mention the A.I has differing priorities like "Get to oxygen if suffocating" or "Repair engines at all costs if trying to escape."
