Akchually they did really well with the lore in the new games. For example take Academy. There were 3 main factions within:
House Anima specializes in summoning elemental spirits and elemental magic, House Materia deals with animating/creating golems/gargoyles/titans, they're mostly magitech oriented House.

And finally there was House Eterna who discovered the necromancy school. Due to how practical and powerful it was compared to the other specializations the other Houses due to their growing influence and power began persecuting them which finally erupted in a civil war which caused them to split off from the Academy faction and are now named Necropolis.
As much as I dislike how they killed the HOMM franchise some of the Ubisofts's ideas and fluff weren't bad.

Dark Messiah was originally supposed to be an Arx Fatalis sequel. Story was presumably written at the last minute to tie in with nu-M&M lore.

And frankly, there was more bad than good, not-Moria land consisting of a dwarf, a dwarf, a dwarf and a dwarf, racist pan-Asia, Necromancers that are Totally Good (Heroes VII features a mission that mentions... refugee undead. No, seriously. We have to care about persecuted undead now?), Elves that are just Toklien elves with no subtlety to any of it.

Homm5 ended up botching the gameplay because of story though. The campaigns are incredibly boring, since they introduce mechanics very slowly for the sake of ~story~.

Whereas the older Homm games gave you access to the full suite of gameplay mechanics right from the very first mission.
