Will the Mario RPG games ever return to their old ways?

TTYD, the game you jack off to at night, involved peach getting kidnapped.

The Toads aren't the only NPCs though.

I don't understand Miyamoto's mindset when it comes to Mario. Most of his best games were the ones that introduced new characters and enemy types, yet he wants everything now to be goombas and green koopas. It's fucking weird seeing them play it safe when their best titles were the ones that made the most risks.

Most of Miyamoto's detractors want Mario to have a story and lore that goes beyond "Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario rescues her". I imagine someone at Nintendo saw what happened to Sonic fumbling around trying to reinvent himself with serious plotlines, said "Fuck that noise", and ran full tilt in the opposite direction.

Wow, the people who live inside your head have little stories of their own, that's cute.

And it works, the more generic and bland a Mario game is the more it sells

Gonna need to see some numbers on that bucko

nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Mario_games

Hmm, that list doesn't serve your point particularly well, the only main-line formulaic game in that is list is new super mario bros wii in third place, it seems to have more to do with how well the consoles sold than anything else.

Nope, at least some people are willing to pick up the torch like that bug game.

It helps that Nintendo has people who can make games, unlike SEGA who's the equivalent of a monkey throwing shit on a wall.

Good doesn't mean shit to Miyamoto. It could be the best Mario game ever made and still be a backstreet abortion to him because he offended his sensibilities.

Modern Nintendo would definitely have the series go back, maybe with Intelligent finished with 3 Houses we can get the A team to work on Paper Mario

Unfortunately it's true, most consumers are idiots and only want the simplest experience to digest. Paper Mario and the RPGs are niche compared to the mainline games.

I still maintain that Colour Splash was the best Paper Mario since the first two. The character designs were weak and the card based combat system is inferior to the turn based one they used to have but in terms of writing and unique levels it was getting there. I like it a lot more than Super, which I feel is remembered a lot more fondly than it deserves.

I wish I still had hope like you user.

I actually do prefer Super, but I can definitely agree that Color Splash had some redeeming qualities to it. It has the best level variety in the series bar none and some good quips. It’s just the story and gameplay that gets me. It’s so frustrating because I feel like both CS and Super could both truly be great if they weren’t so dead set on forgetting the old combat. Super has a nice story and some fantastic music while Color Splash has great level settings and writing, it’s just that both of them are totally missing good core gameplay.

That's a rare opinion you have there, user, I personnally think color splash was trash through and through, not a single original character or setting in sight, it's all reused ideas and concepts, and, as always, having a rpg with combat that doesn't give exp is proof that the devellopers were chimps, even super paper mario got that right and let's not even talk about the shy bandit, the single worst mechanic I've ever seen in any video game.

im playing through paper mario right now for the first time since it initially came out. its an enjoyable experience but not something id revisit, unlike SMRPG which i play through once every couple years.

I'm surprised you're taking smrpg as an exemple, the combat in that game is just one step above regular shit jrpg level, and the story is almost inexistant

interesting you brought up the music. im playing through paper mario right now and the music is terrible, the only real "memorable" melody is the peach theme and even that isnt anything special. its almost surreal how unremarkable the music is for a mario game, they really dropped the ball here. is the music in TTYD this bad too?

The next paper Mario will be 100% TTYD style. Nintendo has completely given up on the casual audience after the Wii u. Look at their major releases this year. Aside from Pokemon which will come every year no matter what you have:

Mario Maker - autism level creating game
MUA - sequel to an old franchise for boomers
Astral Chain- Platinum game where you play as a cop
Luigis mansion - spiritual successor to a GameCube game
Dragon Quest 11 - anime JRPG game
Links awakening - Remake of a fucking gameboy game

Paper Mario is coming home boys

meh, the characters and dialogue are very charming and memorable and the music is one of the best original soundtracks of all time. the levels and color palettes are great too. a lot to appreciate in this game and the timed hits are enough to keep you engaged.

Nintendo has gotten to the point where they care more about preserving Mario's image than actually introducing something new and exciting, which is sad because the whole appeal of Mario is how anything can happen in his whimsical world

I'm not sure if we'll ever get a non-mainline Mario game that has anything interesting going on aesthetically again, at least not while the old guard is still there

TTYD is much better than 64, make sure you try it

do you think it is real?

Attached: yetanother'leak'.png (1313x272, 123K)

Yeah i remember every NPC being a toad in that game and it involving no other villains other than bowser, retard

im playing on playing it next, anyone know if itll run okay on that dolphin emulator? ive never used it before...

64’s music is sorta just whatever. There’s some real standout tracks here and there but I think it’s just pretty middle of the road, not terrible by any means.

Not until the day both Miyamoto and Tanabe are dead.

Dolphin is one of the most optimized emulators, it should run fine.
In fact, you should run paper mario 64 through it from the wii VC version, it is way more stable than using an N64 emulator.

>Rockstar actually porting the first RDR

Nah, not gonna happen.

>capping your own posts and reposting them, on the same fucking day even

>Dolphin emulating a Wii emulating an N64 is more stable than an N64 emulator
I’m not even the least bit surprised, but actually reading it took me aback

TTYD runs fine on Dolphin, there's only like one or two issues that you have to enable specific settings for

Look into the HD mod, it's RAM intensive but it looks good

I cap any paper mario related "leaks", like this one.

They confirmed that M&L games would go back to the original formula due to Paper Jam's backlash which is nice if they can release a new game for switch already. Paper Mario also seems like it'll eventually return to it's roots.

Pretty interesting how our opinions are almost totally polar to one another. I tried to get into SMRPG but found it rather average and didn’t really understand the hype, but I can get into 64 or TTYD every once in a while despite their flaws. I dunno if it’s just me but it feels like a lot of the “Mario” aspects of SMRPG are pretty tacked on, but maybe that’s the appeal.

There's no chance a new paper Mario is being announced soon. Fire emblem just came out and it's made by the same people. The absolute earliest paper Mario could come out is late next year and this isn't the kind of game you hype up a year in advance.

I mean to be fair TTYD is kind of the same way. Two of your partners aren't traditional Mario characters and the settings have no relation to the Mario universe at all.

i appreciate the tip user, but unfortunately im already in chapter 7 on the 64 version

I tried this and found the N64 version more stable.
Dolphin also can't run the Paper Mario 64 mods.

I agree. I think it’s just a matter of taste more than anything else. What I said about SMRPG, someone could just as easily say about TTYD. I think 64 is the most grounded in regular Mario standards without hitting Sticker Star levels out of them.

Super's world and story justified it's existance

As someone who loves both of them I think that's a big part of why I do. The Mario universe is honestly pretty boring. The more they stray from it the more interesting it's going to be to me. I think that's the real reason everyone hates the new ones. It's not the gameplay or the lack of partners, it's the boring Mario characters and settings.

It was fine for what it was but it had mostly fuck all to do with Mario and I kinda understand why Miyamoto got so butthurt about it. They overcorrected, of course, bit Super had some downright hideous character designs.

Why yes, super mario RPG is the greatest mario rpg.

I suppose this is one of the reasons why color splash is more interesting than sticker star since it isn't in the mushroom kingdom (even if it has most of the MK enemies), all they need to do is simple contained settings for each game and that would be great.
Of course good gameplay would be welcome as well.

>The Mario universe is honestly pretty boring

Paper Mario borrows alot from Yoshi's Ilsand but some stupid dip decided that Yoshi needs to be a completely seperate thing so now all the shit from that game is apparently forbidden. Hell I haven't seen a single thing from galaxy or sunshine that isn't Petey Piranha, Jr or Rosalina. It's like half the Mario universe is schorched earth and they can only use things from NSMB and 3D World for some reason.

I think the mario universe is actually a welcome addition to ttyd, but mostly as an esthetical thing, it give most of the enemies and character a cohesive theme, and really brings the setting together.

The mario universe is at its best when it actually attempt to create new things to add to the setting, like odyssey and sunshine

don't forget Sword&Shield - OoT tier masterpiece.

For me it’s a lack of everything that made the first few games so special, which for me at least, does include the gameplay. Sticker Star stripped everything that made the series so special to me, and replaced it with stuff that I just found to be lifeless and trite. The only thing redeemable quality I can think of is the music, which I found to be surprisingly great, if a little samey.

>Luigis mansion - spiritual successor to a GameCube game
Seems more like a mix between the best of the original and Dark Moon. It looks fantastic but it’s pretty clear that it’s a successor to both games, not one or the other.

Smart npcs

i agree completely, i remember being somewhat mind blown when i played paper mario for the first time when it came out and saw the character Watt.

This, it’s not an inherently bad setting, not nearly. In fact, the most out there location in Odyssey would’ve been much cooler if they’d gone with a more Mario-like aesthetic if you ask me. Look at this New Donk concept art and tell me this doesn’t look fucking rad. I pray that someday we can get something similar to this city in a sequel to Odyssey.

What was so bad about Paper Jam to cause a backlash? I've never played it.

I agree, actually. Looking at the courses in Mario Kart, they convey a pretty good idea of how the Mushroom Kingdom actually looks and in a way I feel like it's a missed opportunity that none of the 3D Mario games are actually set there.

I wish mainline Mario games would explore some of the locations from the spinoffs. Not even Beanbean Kingdom or things like that, either, but shit like Neo Bowser City with a bunch of Koopa NPCs.

It was really boring and used only NSMB characters + king bob omb and (non luigi's mansion) King boo and the classic NSMB world settings (grass, desert, beach, snow, forest, volcano)

It feels like they squeezed as little potential as they could’ve out of a M&L and Paper Mario crossover, for one thing. Giant Battles were replaced with “papercraft battles” which are three times as sluggish without any of the fun or spectacle. Toad Hunts were also added which destroy any pacing the game might’ve had to force in mini games that feel like they’re there just to pad the game out.

It’s a shame the best core gameplay is stuck in the weakest entry in the series because the concept has so much potential but they did next to nothing with it. Take this with a grain of salt but I’m pretty sure somewhere along the way Alphadream scrapped the story for something much more simple for whatever reason which could mean a higher up told them to tone it down, or the story was just too messy and ambitious for its own good, it’s hard to say.

They'll do something different next time due to the Wii U Paper Mario's extremely bad reception and extremely poor sales.

It's more likely the series was put on the chopping block instead, this is a second party japanese studio, not a western one like retro or next level games. They don't listen to feedback.

The Papercraft Battles kind of reminded me of what Paper Mario had become. Here you had this big open plane that encouraged free movement and wasn't cramped or top down like Mario Luigi usually is and it only reminded me that Paper Mario is now made of literal cardboard and scrolling around on some shitty NSMB world map.

>best core gameplay
If only they cut the long as fuck special attacks, it would be excellent. I don't get why since dream team they are making moves last forever and be full of gimmicks.

But the shit gameplay and lack of NPC's really stand out.

>i remember being somewhat mind blown when i played paper mario for the first time when it came out and saw the character Watt.
but Watt's species was already long introduced

That looks more like a fireball than a ball of electricity

The npc in super are some of the best one though, most of them have unique dialogue that changes after each chapter, the only issue with them is that they all look like garbage

Well we know ISIS have been doing almost nothing for like the past couple of years
That being said Kawade is still stuck working on Paper Fire Emblem, so whatever
