Being that MHW is my first monhon despite being very interested in the series since the first game back on ps2 (I never EVER play handhelds), the next MonHun game has alot to improve on. Still, MHW is fun but overall incredibly frustrating and grindey.

Technically speaking, as a RESEARCH commission you probably shouldn't be killing as much stuff as you do. There's only a small handful of capture quests and despite being all for saving the ecosystem or whatever no one bats an eye at your wanton slaughter of wildlife. It really comes to a head with something like vaal hazak, which was apparently only encountered once before and is for the most part an undocumented species, and the first thing you're told to do is go kill it for shits.

Use both modes. Axe form has greater reach and mobility, pretty meaty hits, it's almost like GS + long sword. Using Axe form builds the phial charge, which you deplete with hits while in Sword form - dropping below the phial threshold in Sword form forces you back into Axe mode, so don't let yourself get caught out in the middle of a combo. You can also manually reload the phial if it's below threshold (not fully), and switching from Sword to Axe will refresh a bit of phial charge too.

Sword form is your high-damage mode, Axe's wild swing is pretty damaging but you are stuck in place and deplete stamina with it. Sword form unlocks whatever phial bonus your swaxe has, most of them have elemental damage phials, a few have status damage phials. You also usually go through whatever armor the monster has, so you can avoid bouncing on hard targets you want to break. You also get access to Elemental Discharge, a mashing stationary attack that does a bunch of that phial damage but depletes the phial charge significantly and morphs you back into axe mode when it's done. Making attacks in Sword form builds the amped meter around the phial charge meter, building it to maximum unlocks a damage boost and automatic mounting Elemental Discharge, though don't spam that shit because lots of monster attacks will just hit you while you're stuck on there. Amped mode eventually disappears though.

That's pretty much it. You learn with practice when it's appropriate to be in whichever form, there's less UNGA BUNGA like Charge Blade since the ED isn't as much of a power hit. Stay in Axe mode most of the time for the safety of reach and mobility, press on an opening with Sword mode to maximize damage.

I main IG and sometimes use LS or DB. I mained DB before IG was a thing. It's because I really hate slow weapons, it just miffed me to hunt using them. Also I can't seem to grasp how to use ranged and how to mix and match ammo. I have of course tried them all and ultimately I came to this conclusion.
