They have to sacrifice cooling to keep them small, and without a large amount of cooling they have to use weaker hardware because strong hardware requires more electricity when generates more heat, which brings us back to cooling. Cooling is everything.

They are not supposed to look good, same as things in fashion shows aren't supposed to look good.

They are supposed to explore concepts.

Nobody would design a console like this for example, but it can be used to think about concepts like:
Screens on the surface of the console
Non-regular shape
The console being an X itself

They usually look both retarded and futuristic because when designing something futuristic-looking we usually pick a specific, somewhat strange concept and apply it to the whole object

Pic related for example is fucking retarded but you can clearly see they are playing with the concept of a blockier looking car, which makes it look more defined and sturdier, it also unites the front with the back with what looks like a single piece, stylizing it some.

It's kinda like a tech demo, just for design, it's not about what is done but about what can be done.

Do you people think the next generation consoles with come with a disc drive? They add a fair bit to the price of the console and take up large amounts of space. Modern computers have long since abandoned them, and with most modern games having a mandatory day 1 30gb patch anyway you might as well just download the game.

Oh I get that cooling is important. I've had several consoles in the past die due to heating. I'm just curious if the overall design of the vents is helpful. They're normally just set around the outside so this v shaped vent is something I haven't seen before.

Because they're made by retards who aren't bounded by little things like ACTUAL PHYSICS or economics. Real consoles have to deal with real heat, with real component constraints, and real budgets.

Extremely common for early development hardware for anything. Picture related as an example, this is what the original iphone prototype look like. The original Xbox 360 dev kit was a heavily modified PowerMac G5.

Hardware has to actually be developed and debugged and software written for it and such well before it's completely frozen and the work begins to make a compact SoC out of it. It's convenient to have big easy ports to work with, in some cases even be able to hand move connections, to do hardware interrupts and such wherever when bugs are still plentiful even at low levels, and on and on. And as other anons have said, devkit having more memory or storage or whatever isn't uncommon either (as well as simulation modes that crank it down to identical to the shipping hardware), to account for overhead of full debug symbols and versioning and other stuff that gets stripped in gold master.
