Insomniac teamed up with microsoft because Sony didn't allow them to keep the IP and microsoft was so desperate for games they let insomniac keep it in exchange for publishing rights of the first game.
Now the IP is in hands of sony, oh the irony

How does this shit even work, if sony told them to make a "GOTY" version of it, could they release that on PS4?

Sony owns the Ip but they don't own the publishing rights which are still with Microsoft
Same situation as Demon's Souls where Sony owns the IP but gave the publishing rights to Atlus in NA and Bandai Namco in the EU
Which is why Sony can't do anything with Demon's Souls, they can't rerelease it or put it on PSNow or whatever

Sony literally owns CTR and has the publishing rights for the PSX Crash games and that didn't stop Activision from remaking those games. If they really want, they can do something about it and put SO on the PS4.

It seems like the publishing rights are only for physical copies sold. Since nioh is only sold through steam on pc it is fine. Which is also why people asked koei to release the game on xbox digital only.
