generally speaking in the halo universe UNSC vs Covenant ships end up with most USNC ships being destroyed. Almost every battle is a losing one for the UNSC. The ones they win its because they take tremendous losses or get extremely fucking lucky. This is why no Human worlds are ever truly defended. Once the covenant are committed its merely a hold out to evacuate who they can and then wait for the world to fucking burn. This doesn't change until 4 years later in the Halo 4 era where the covenant and former covenant is in shambles while humans are rebuilding and advancing.
Basically if it wasn't for the flood breaking out and the Covenant civil war humanity would of likely been wiped out. Its kind of funny because when you play the games especially on fucking normal or lower you are so bad ass but the reality of the situation is shit is fucking bleak lorewise.

Thats not necessarily true. Covenant ships are pretty fucking weak without their shields. And Johnson states that Earth's MAC guns could blast one in one shot.

yup and its bullshit. A covenant fleet smaller than that which destroyed Reach that had less defenses still managed to breach the defenses. Furthermore even with the Covenant in a civil war losing a tremendous amount of ships they still break through a second time and proceed to ass rape the earth and set up camp in Africa.
You are correct about the ships being weak without shields though. Some of the battles the UNSC won was because they hid nukes in debris fields which took out the shields so the UNSC could pound their ass. Then the covenant who were ignorant to nuclear weapons figured it out putting an end to that tactic. Tactics and overall strategy humans are vastly superior in space or on the ground. But covenant have better more foolproof tech and are able to produce more of it.
