Speed boosts are almost always good in FF games all the way up to 12.

Being able to turn off random encounters is god tier to be honest, if you find youtself strong enough or treking through a low level area not for EXP but for side quest reasons or whatever, this helps big time

These FF remasters are the only times I get to use my Vita because I use remoteplay while turbo-grinding for an hour or two while watching a movie or something.

I must've played through that Dollet mission demo around 3-4 dozen times before the game itself launched. To this day I get goosebumps just thinking about how lifelike the graphics looked to young me.

One can do that if one thinks about it logically and take into consideration questions like "what is the essence of a Final Fantasy game" and try judge them without involving one's own preferences and opinions (I mean: for example if you personally prefer 7 over all the others because lets say it was your first FF and you feel nostalgia for it you have some soft spot for the music or you personally relate to some character in it, then throw all that out of the window and don't include it in the equation).

2 is indeed objectively one of the worst. 12, 13 and 15 aren't that much better though (but each for entirely different reasons than 2).

PC version has cheats, as well as additional ones through a popular mod like allowing fast forward during cutscenes and always distribute ap to all party.

I'm not a fan of appealing to "consensus" and I dislike using that word but the consensus seems to be that 8 at least has a much more accurate translation than 7. It's may be possible there were some important (but probably subtle) details which got lost in the translation. I know there were some unimportant things which got translated incorrectly, such as Zell being obsessed with hot dogs when in the original it was bread (but that was probably intentional).

Yeah, that probably happened to some extent. And it's almost unavoidable (that some flavor/subtlety will be lost) when translating into English from certain languages, like Japanese or German or Russian.

I just purchased it, came with a theme, I didn't really liked it that much aside from the sound effects so I switched back.

All that's required is playing the game and reading, no special skills needed. Most people who played it several times back in the day "figured it out". I highly doubt anyone fully grasped the entirety plot on their first playthru (same goes for 7 and 9) though, that would be pretty special if someone did. It's harder for new players nowadays to get it, as nowadays people are quick to rely on outside (online) sources for help games in general, instead of just playing them and thinking things thru. Help not just with beating games, but also with understanding them, so they go look up "Game Title Explained" videos on YT or "theories" on forums etc, which sorta mess up the experience for them as their heads get all clouded up and biased from other people opinions.

Case in point; the Silent Hill games (Team Silent's). When they were new, 1999-2004, most people (who played the games several times) understood them very well. A few years after 2004 it became more difficult and confusing for people, not because the games' plot suddenly had become harder to grasp but because of all the junk info spread online on forums and places like the Silent Hill wiki. It was worst from 2006 to 2010 or so, thankfully in 2010 the TRSHE documentary (produced by oldfags who played the games pre-2005) helped clear up things for new players. Without that documentary, players today would have an even harder time today understanding the games as opposed to when they were new.

Didn't the music reset issue get fixed on 9 for ps4? 7 is still fucked though even though it got fixed on switch and xbone. The awful slowdown on the world map killed 9 for me more than the music reset issue.

After VII was successful Square actually beefed up their localization team significantly for the west and devoted a lot more time and communication to it, so it's not a stretch to say VIII's script was likely scrutinized several times harder than VII was, and that the translation seems more like a dry and fairly literal translation into english which is why it comes off as so stiff all the time.

So her actions help the heroes murder her. What a dumb villain.

Nobody in 8's world can use magic except the sorceress. Odine tries to make some stuff to suppress sorceress powers, but it's limited in its use. GFs are a way for regular people to use magic to fight such a powerful foe. And Ultimecia has her anti-GF attacks which blow away magic to try to counter them.

What I mean is if you create a force entirely to stop a sorceress, facing magic should be a focus of their training if not THE ENTIRE focus.

Holy Fuck my dude, how are you still on this? Draw is an early game solution to getting magic. As you get more GFs, you unlock Refine abilities that make Draw pointless except for a few spells and getting new GFs.

Also, characters have a limit on how many individual spells they can carry, so depending on how they do it, there's a good chance you'll have a stock of less useful spells (i.e. Blizzard and Blizzara, in addition to Blizzaga) taking up slots that you'll need to unload and still obtain late game spells via appropriate methods.

And here's the Remaster. Looks like they did apply a light smoothing filter but it looks perfectly fine to me here. It gets rid of the pixelation which does make it look a bit less sharp but I don't think any actual detail is lost.

Which is a moot point because even with scaling, all the enemies have low caps on all their stats and you will be OP just from regular leveling.

Plus you need to level your GFs to get access to the more interesting skills to add some variety to the combat. I was level 92 by the time I got to disc 4 and the only challenge in the whole game was Ultima/Omega and Ultimecia

Of all games to get a fucking physical release, why VIII? Wouldn't it have made more sense to release a collection with it alongside VII and IX? AT least X and XII still looked presentable in this day and age, there's a reason most PS1 games these days are either downloads or straight up remakes.

thanks for reminding me of this feeling. ff8 was the coolest thing ever, and i loved ff7. i don't think i've ever been more amazed by a game than ff8 when it came out. it's still an amazing achievement when you consider the development cycle.
