Because his racism is one facet of his overall character, comes from a personal experience he had and contributes to his growth as a character as he learns to move on from it. This also achieves far far more as a "dont b raciss" type message than any non-Japanese approaches you may be thinking of.

Racists aren't seen as sympathetic in western media, not since the 1950's and the black and white television era.

They're used as villains 100% of the time, because the media is simply vitriolic and not interested in making people understand one another or promoting solutions to solve misunderstandings, it's simply about executing, socially or physically, the people who hold these views in question.

In Japan, murder is seen as a huge deal, in America, it's used as a response in media by hack writers who make schlock media. Whenever racism or hatred is brought up in eastern media, it's a plot point and a path of character development, in western media it marks a dead character or a hero who's life is eternally shat on.

It WAS a western trope. And it is an eastern trope. The media used to be different. You can't get away with a sympathetic racist in western media. People who have tried don't get far in the industry. Since Japan is detached from western sources, they can get away with whatever they want. They don't have gatekeepers outside of gore and violence.

That's why sex is an approachable topic in the east, while in the west only violence is.
