This. The dash of sincerity they added was an overall improvement from the unyielding cynicism and cruelty of the original series. Too much would have spoiled it, but they knew just how much to mete out. Also can't wait for the Destroy All Humans remake.

I'm not sure the invader zim universe needs world building per se. I think making it up as they go along and gunning for maximum weirdness is fine.

movie was amazing, only thing i don't get why did they make membrane hallucinate? would be much more powerful if Zim would have extracted his memories and Dib had a way to save the tallest as a stalemate at the end. I meant more in terms of the humor. A lot of the humor too was just jokes that've been some better in the show. The stuff with Membrane was a nice change for something like a movie. His appearances throughout the show were always some of the funniest moments. Overall I enjoyed it and wouldn't mind more stuff in the style of the movie. It's different, but not a soulless bastardization like most revivals. It very much felt like everyone working on it loved the series.

Jhonen sounds like a lazy bastard sometimes but it seems like he really puts his all into the projects he does choose to take on.

Late season 1 and season 2 of Zim were already heading in the more flamboyant and silly direction. The edginess peaked in early season 1 with Dark harvest.

Keeping in mind that it received a Y-7 rating, it was pretty cynical and dark, even if it wasn't outright violent or gorey. It definitely wasn't worse than Ren and Stimpy as far as edge factor, and ultimately JV himself had no interest in sneaking anything "under the radar". The show is definitely innocent at its core. Jhonen even hated the idea that some of his fans under a certain age might be exposed to JTHM, so I know Zim is pretty tame by some standard.

He's not ashamed of it, he's just doing the equivalent of looking back and being like "man I acted like a fag, sorry guys". Dib was his self insert, and the reason Dib was an arrogant asshole is because Vasquez was an arrogant asshole.
