Yes as it means the technology is getting better.
Game visuals are so constrained that artists have to use all manner of tricks to keep the polycount low and the games running smooth.
I think more realistic, I am actually interested if a good game can be made with that level of detail. Game gotta be fun tho.
have we reached the point of diminishing returns though? Surly there will be a point where pushing graphics harder will be a waste of time right?
Death Stranding looks like fucking shit. We've hit the point where artists can't keep up with the poly count. Only AI will move photorealism forward from here.
prefer heavily stylized graphics instead of realism. I take Hylics any day over rdr2.
I dont think we have reached the limit. I think its simply technology needs to improve, imagine having that PC which could play realistic games in a stable way like 60 fps. To me that sounds like some year 2100 shit to me.
We are reaching the point of diminishing returns, if not already.
Also, I don't see the need for games graphics to advance further. Improved graphics doesn't mean better games.
They should stop focusing on visual realism and more on physics. Physics haven’t gotten any better since Half Life 2 and that’s just sad. We don’t even get proper crumple physics or destructive environments or fluid physics in games. Tons of missed opportunities for emergent gameplay in these things.
Artists cant keep up with the plycount?
Every piece of videogame foliage is a mess of transparent image planes. Grass is just as horrific. Games cant even handle the fucking basics.
>Should games keep pushing for more realistic graphics?
They will anyway, eventually we will get photorealism. I think what he is criticism here is the obsession with "reality" or what we perceive it to be. Like "why do heroes get tired in movies?" , his answer would be maybe be "aesthetics" and that is more than good enough.
I dont think he is actually criticism things actually looking real, he is a filmmaker in the 50s/60s, the idea of CG videogame graphics didn't exist to him as a concept.
The technology should always push forward, the developers should chose whatever fits their artistic vision.
No.
It's waste of money
Really this shit is expansive. Look for example at Star Citizen meme game. It's ambitions. Too ambitious for current technology. However most of those ambitions can be real in game with not realistic graphics. You can have everything.
So yeah unrealistic graphics with tons of options and physics > realistic garbage with nothing
Fuck graphics. Developers have literal decades of fantastic shit to learn from. I want advancements in game design, intricate systems working together, immersive sound design and atmosphere. All muh grafix gets us is ~200 gb filesizes and shitty buzzwords to flaunt at console reveals.
I'd rather have a unique art style than everything looking realistic. All "realistic" games look similar (look at most of the Sony exclusives this generation), and I couldn't tell the difference unless the main character was very clearlyt present and I was intimately familiar with them. At least with other games and studios, I can tell what series they're from, or what studio made it. I can see realism whenever I step outside, I can't see the bright saturated colors of Mario or the thick outlines of psychos from the Borderlands games whenever I step outside. gameplay is more important than either of those. Id rather have a game that looks like shit as long as it's fun to play. I play games for fun, not for the visuals. Games should be fun first, pretty second
This, good looking games almost always have style instead of G R A P H I C S. Dishonored and newer Deus Ex comes to mind
>The technology should always push forward
Yeah look at all those cinematic games. Outside of graphics they have nothing.
Look at something like Rimworld. Terraria. Those one are inidie games with 1000+ hours of gamepaly. Look at Auorra 4X.
techniques that produce perfect realism can be used to make unrealistic things more believable
old fatass is a short sighted retard
reminder he's was a huge faggot
aside from that graphics should complement the rest of the game
if gameplay or story requires realistic graphics then be it, but sometimes they go better with a stylized art style
why are we still having this conversation?
I agree that it's an art in in of itself to make things look as real as possible while still employing a ton of skills to make it run good but I still feel the point being made is that realism won't lead to anything ground breaking. RTX will probably be the only thing to be a real 'jump' in technology for game visuals for the next 10-15 years.
>why are we still having this conversation?
Because AAA games are garbage?
>ugly man isn't an aesthete
every time
Not in terms of texture quality, or model detail. We need to slow down and focus on AI, animation, more stable performance, fitting more in the a single space without getting pop-in. General optimisation of the best we currently have. We don't see much in terms of innovation with hardware cycles now, the limitations imposed are often fixed with the next card, or a rerelease of a console. When a solution to a performance problem is "change your hardware", the pressure on developers is much lower.
Look at something like HZD, which looks fine but the world itself is shallow and dull, nothing feels like more than a pretty backdrop. This shouldn't be accepted.
Not sure what you're arguing, friendo
The state of zoomers
This desu. I don't think it will be long before we hit a wall based on how far we can go with visuals.
That was my problem with RDR2. It was to realistic and because Rockstar wanted to keep the realism everything took longer than it should in a game.
>this very influential person said this thing many years ago and now we must take what he said as the ultimate truth
I hate when people do this. Who the fuck said we must take everything Hitchcock said as a gospel? As if he had the final say on anything JUST because he was Hitchcock. I can simple disagree with him, so what? Besides, why no one takes the context in with this phrase was said into question? He was clearly talking about movies, but videogames aren't movies so what other variables can we ably to it?
>Why the hell would anyone go to a movie when they can have the real thing?
Was he retarded?
nice meme, now refute my statement
protip: kill yourself before you become a further embarrassment
cool meme cringe binge underage retard
Notice how technology pushing forward didn't stop those shitty indies from being made?
A photo realistic fireball shot by an incredibly detailed orcish warlock is nothing like "nature".
This argument is antiquated
>Notice how technology pushing forward didn't stop
How do you think those shitty indies were made?
Graphics have turned into a selling point and it's killing the quality of games. Now all we see are trailers with "not actual gameplay / not ingame footage" in the corner. The fact that people are buying games exclusively because how it looks really tells you how fucked video games of the future will be. "It feels like I'm watching a movie" will start to become a complement.
i'll bite, can you please provide the good people with an example first
The point is thats not the fault of the technology, its the devs
Whether through lack of talent or the fact that games need to be held back for consoles or nobody is bothering to push the envelope anymore
technically they could've still been made if technology stopped advancing like 20 years ago
Not only you're a retard for having that shit opinion, but you're also a retard for believing that's Hitchcock.
That's not even Hitchcock
Stylized games are what make the strongest impressions and live on in minds while generally also being many times less expensive to model. The big push for photorealistic graphics is tragic in some regards.
No, just give me my fucking working mirrors.
>Yea Forums doesn't know about surrealism/expressionism/impressionism
Well your kind is exactly why movie and AAA industry are so bad. Literary every great directors were thinking like artists or were artists by literal meaning. That's why all their movies have artistic merit even now.
Modern video games are apposite of this concept. Or even worse. Video games actually copy modern movies. Hollywood movies.
>Stylized games are what make the strongest impressions and live on in minds
Maybe on a child's/manchild's mind, similar to how cartoons/pixar movies are more stimulating to kids than live action films
No. Games should push for more creative and interesting art direction.
No, more advanced graphics automatically makes games worse. Yes there are many factors which make a game bad, but the better the graphics are the less good the game HAS to be in order to sell well -- the worse the graphics are, the more well-made the game needs to be.
The guy in your pic is a retard though, probably has jewish genes.
>The big push for photorealistic graphics is tragic in some regards.
Kids and tasteless normalfags likes photorealism. Crysis audience as example.
That old fart would have a point if hyperrealism and realism weren't forms of art.
no
yeah that's why kids love fortnite so much, photorealism
I really, really like that image
based
>have we reached the point of diminishing returns though
We've been there for a short while.
>reverse search with google, yandex, iqdb and saucenao
>no results
sauce onegaishimasu
Holy shit you're mad
I find that moeblob head on a realistic body disconcerting. I can never get past that in hentai images.
Stuff that tried to b realistic as possible 10 or 20 years ago is now seen as stylized lmao
I can't go outside and play death stranding or kawaii ugu rape adventure the quote is retarded
Different art movements. Artists often arguing with each others too.
>no results
It only took me 2 seconds to find it on google, you lying faggot
twitter.com
Might as well. Mainstream Western gaming is already shitty semi-interactive movies made by Hollywood failures.
save it, it's yours
Realism is and will always be fucking boring. This applies to movies, animation, games, and art; the more the creator embraces style over "MUH DETAILS EVERYWHERE", the more timeless it becomes.
Disney's recent remakes offer a direct comparison of this, for example.
>muh realism
Why do people want to immitate reality in games?
Just go for a walk in the forest if that's all you're looking for
2D characters are not flat outside heavy stylization like deviantart want to believe
AAA devs can do whatever they have the time and money for, their design is always going to be homogenized and bland anyway. That's why they're so excited about AI being used in pipelines, their artists are overworked fixing up every little detail that literally no one will notice
Smaller games have always and will always have less advanced graphics and a greater focus on art direction much in the same way indie movies won't be shot on 4K 3D RED cameras and will focus on cinematography and lighting
polycounts aren't a trick, budgeting assets is the most important part of graphics performance.
We hit the point of diminishing returns around 2004-2007 I'd argue. Full programmable pixel shaders were the last major leap in graphics tech
>artists can't keep up with the poly count
what the fuck does this even mean? making game ready assets is easier than ever now that we have far less restrictive budgets
what if I'm looking for shootouts or reckless driving or any kind of illegal activity without hurting real people or going to jail or risking my life?
Look at PUBG
Fortnite is simply better game. PUBG was abomination
Not that user, but I would rather ask.
Who is he ?
Nah, i prefer PUBG. It's almost like this is all a matter of personal opinion/preference.
Jean Renoir. But Hitchcock was on expressionism side
Is that a motherfucking Maiden Reference?
I prefer simply shooting over autistic building
Thanks, I will check him out.
>can’t play Death Stranding irl
youtube.com
Based retard
We need better physics, lighting, and animations before we continue with graphics. Graphics have been the only real improvement over the last ten years.
