It's a sign that you lack confidence in your game. You lose out on a lot of potential sales, but if your game is shit, then you can only profit by taking the deal.

This is why there are still no good games on EGS.

It has nothing to do with China, it's how Epic pays the devs off for the deal. Epic doesn't jsut hand you money when you sign the contract. They work by guaranteeing a minimum sales target.

So basically you get a deal from Epic and they say "ok we guarantee you 200,000 sales". You make the game, release it and then day one Epic buys out 160,000 copies of the game to fill the guaranteed minimum you agreed to. This means that you not only get the money, but you get to fudge your sales numbers and make you game appear better than it might be. You could have sold 10,000 copies but you get to report 210,000 to the media.

This is why Epic sellouts keep reporting sales successes but will not elaborate on how many sales they got. Metro Exodus "Sold better than Last Light", but they won't say the actual sales number, and Last Light didn't sell very well to begin with. While Ubisoft celebrates the new Anno being the "Fastest selling Anno game". Of course it's fastest selling, it sold a guaranteed number of copies to Epic the moment it was made available for purchase.

Long story short is Epics system allows for both monetary gains and faking popularity with sales numbers, so it's appealing to shit devs and small indies.

No? The money to hire people to make your shit has to come from somewhere, either straight out of your pocket or from someone else's, usually a publisher. The only exception this is crowdfunding but even then you whine that it's a scam and 9/10 times funding never gets above a few million

The metric for exclusivity must have changed quite a bit from 10 years ago.
