The nightmares were interesting but the mob monsters were way too much bland and I stopped playing the first game at the last dungeon. Compare them to the monsters from Refrain, who have interesting designs and distinctive high quality sprites.

To those newfreinds that are planning on playing part 1, the dub is one of those 'half-dubs' where only the important dialogue is dubbed and other parts silent, while the subbed jap version has every line fulled voiced.

I found it much better, with diverse gimmicks and atmosphere in each labyrinths, and bittersweet story and characters. The grind in postgame is a bit shitty though.

Wasn't it included in the game? There's the unlockable pages you can collect that tell the story of those angel people or whatever, I honestly could not for the life of me understand that plot point I don't know if it was the translation or what.

I liked the first one and got most of the way through but since it includes both games I'll just play them both on there.
