Having a limited number of pokemon is unironically better for the game, at least compared to having the same +800 and counting. Not every place has the same pokemon species, this is a good decision in both the thematic and narrative perspective since it opens up and makes the world feel real. And it's also a good decision in a gameplay perspective since this will make way for new pokemon becoming favorable competitively instead of the same handful of OP ones.

I highly doubt that SWSH will be more balanced than USUM, but definitely will be more balanced than LGPE.
This is because every Pokemon can be a potential Check/Counter/Competition to top tier Pokemon.
Imagine if suddenly, Tapu Fini, Tapu Bulu, Toxapex, Protean, Choice Scarf, Kommo-o, Mega Gyarados, and Megas that use priority were all removed from USUM, but Battle Bond Greninja still existed.
So many ways to beat Ash Greninja are now gone, as well as several competitors.

While I don’t know if Ash Greninja will be in Galar (probably not), I do know there will be a top tier Pokemon that could have been countered by cut Pokemon/Megas, and otherwise wouldn’t be as broken.

Compare with, say, Lapras going from Great to Good to Shit over the course of the first 3 gens due to actual nerfs to its builds.

Currently, I have no idea if the reduced quantity comes with the same shit quality as before. If they're doing focusing on multiplayer this generation and removing pokemon because of the online meta, why not just introduce certain rules for online ranked multiplayer/let players ban certain pokemon before a game/some other way to limit the pool used, but let us single player and unranked multiplayer casuals be able to use whatever they want? I had no intention of buying Sword/Shield until the ultra/updated version came out, but not being able to collect all pokemon is a gigantic turnoff for me ever buying this gen, or future gens if this is done again.

That's literally what official competitions have done, VGC tournaments in the first year of a new gen are always limited to regional Pokedex only. Afterwards they tend to open it to the full National Dex and even sometimes allow box legends for some reason, but there's no reason they couldn't continue to impose a limited pool, especially since they run dozens of online mini competitions every year where you can only use certain eligible Pokemon.

Gamefreak doesn't bother balancing at all, so what's the fucking point. The same shitmons are still shitmons and the broken mons are still broken. Let people actually use their favorites at least.
