I kinda thought it starts off good, even before the combat. It kind of builds up this atmosphere that really makes it feel like a dire scenario. Then again I played it with headphones on in a dark room for total immersion.

The theme and pacing suck because there's this constant element of Yamato's bullshit; he's like Naoya minus the "I planned this" part.
Meanwhile in 1 you steadily watch humanity go to shit, all the way up to breaking through a barricade of literal angels because FUCK staying in the lockdown
There was a lot more threat with the death clock than the clips. It was so vague and relied on the implications made rather than showing off what and when. Party members fought with each other pretty readily throughout the story while the route split at the end was all that was really driving the allies apart in 2.

Granted, neither are bad games in my opinion, although 2 probably appeals because Bunny is a fucking meme

Even then, 2 still has better pacing, bosses, mission objectives, maps, and more demon and skill variety which gives the player more options instead of putting them in situations where they'd have to use weaker demons in a race because their racial skills are too useful to give up. 1 definitely has a better story, albeit one that retreads old ground covered by SMT, but that's all it has over 2.

Starts good, improves after Beldr, stays good. Although the final day is unbelievably grindy, I'm doing Naoya's route at the minute (first playthrough) and I'm having to spend so long grinding.

Honestly the worst thing about this game (by far!) is the lack of difficulty. Just fuse demons and give your characters the skills they need to counter the enemies they face, it's very straightforward.
