If you are being genuine it's simple... A lot of japanese companies work with a top down/word of god corporate structure. IP's are typically either pet projects of the permanent elite at the top or they are handed to the elite on roulette.
What this effectively means is... All the blame can be focused on one creative head. But likewise most IP's from japan have creative leads and thus they are often passion projects for these leads.
The IPs that don't do this... Like for example sonic the hedgehog. Remain inconsistent between every release and constantly shift focus due to the lack of a creative head.
Western games are this amplified, they are creative cesspits either due to office politics and power games or because they are design by statistics and marketing.
You want a good game, you need someone heading it who cares about its lore, world, internal consistency, characters and gameplay. Western games tend to prioritize one of these things and let the rest be handled by metrics.
Small devs and indie games have a good rap in the west because they buck that trend.

Unironically it's because anime is much more mainstream these days and isn't seen as pure cringe. Netflix, Crunchy and Funimation and whatever TV networks that air it have exposed it to far more people. Also movies like Your Name. All these normie tier films that get really popular make it easier for people to accept anime themed shit like games.

I was 7 in 1999, but, I don't think it was as big back then as it is now. Today you have normies watching shows like Attack on Titan and One Punch Man, absolute normies who typically don't consume any Japanese media at all. I don't think there was anything comparable back in 1999.

Yep I watched some devs documentries on youtube and on the japanese side you have people like Kamiya, Daisuke from guilty gear, Yoko Taro, Koyimbles, Itsuno... people with a vision and passion.
Meanwhile on the western side characters are created in a lab by consensus. Look at Aloy from Horizon, in the interviews they excplicitly talk about how a lot of people were responsible for her design and "personality" and that they tried to create an "iconic" character. The end result is a bland protagonist with no personality or consistency, for example Aloy is supposed to be 16 but looks almost 30 and has a weird face because they are super proud of not making a "sexualized" character in 2017 like we're still living in tomb riders ps1 era. She's also supposed to be an outcast and everyone in her tribe is forbidden to speak to her, but somehow Aloy is the most sociable person in the game who even flirts "ironically" with some females, but at the same time has no sexuality and feels no love.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
No, fucking seriously? WHO? Literally fucking who wants this? I never asked for this shit. I grew up on awesome art in the PnP RPGs and shit, and that's what I expected to be fully represented in western RPGs one day. I never got that. We skipped it. We went straight to EVERYTHING MUST BE FUCKING UGLY
Frank Frazetta Luis Royo Boris Vallejo Victoria Frances and so many other western artists are out there to use as a basis for fucking BEAUTIFUL western art in games and developers continually fucking ignore all of it. Remember the art for the dragon lance novels and pnp books? Remember the beautiful dark sun art?
Did we EVER get that in a game that was technologically advanced enough to ACTUALLY depict the art instead of vaguely hint at it with over pixelated shit that we could barely make out?
NO
I WANT THAT SHIT TO BE OUR GAMES NOW
I want western RPGs to go back to the art behind the old western RPGs and actually try and depict that beautiful fucking shit.
Hell there are even modern artists they could use for reference, creating beautiful art that modern idiot developers pass over completely in favor of beating everything to death with the ugly stick.
>Did we EVER get that in a game that was technologically advanced enough to ACTUALLY depict the art instead of vaguely hint at it with over pixelated shit that we could barely make out? >NO
The in game visuals lagged massively behind what the art represented. You see the east actually trying to bring their art to life in these games, and succeeding even. In the west? Old games like dark messiah couldn't handle the visuals the art demanded and now that we have the hardware power to do it all the devs want to do is create the most ugly shit imaginable.
Hunter Cox
>Name a modern WRPG with challenging combat.
that is a good question, I haven't touched any modern WRPGs outside of Skyrim
Look at Dark Messiah's concept art. It struggled to even come close to depicted what the art is meant to be. It's just trashy old 3d graphics low poly, jerky animations and muddy textures.

Oliver Ward
My guess? Unironically graphics. We always had "anime games" but take a look at some PS1 or PS2 games. They don't look like anime. Even the pixelart ones, while nice, looked more like pixelart than an anime on screen. But the most recent games, with their shaders and filters and resolution of graphics, can make it look like an active anime when viewed on screen. And so the big anime fans are all into JRPGs since it's not like they have any standards to begin with.
Just look at the list you provided. Everything except Octopath Traveler looks like a bunch of anime cutscenes, and not just in a few select FMVs.
I'll also note that you are probably padding your numbers a bit. "Best selling game of the franchise" is pretty much what you'd expect since hobbies tend to grow over time. Unless there is a serious downturn, I'd expect most sequels to end up the best selling of their franchise just because new fans aren't going back to buy previous titles in the series.
Jack Cook
the real truth is that xeno has always been trash. xenogears and xenoblade x were unfinished, the xenosaga games were abysmal, xenoblade 1 and 2 were cringe shovelware. it's easily one of the most overrated series of all time.

Chase Diaz
>always take place in either a generic tolkien dungeons & dragons setting If anything, jrpgs are for more guilty of that.
A good way to demonstrate what I mean is to look at how jrpgs utilize their settings. For instance, if you look at wrpgs that aren't high fantasy, like say Fallout, Deus Ex, Jagged Alliance, Vampire The Masquerade, etc. they tend to incorporate aspects of their setting in their gameplay. And I don't mean things like characters using guns. I mean stuff like Fallout having a barter economy, which is logical in a post-apocalyptic society where monetization has broken down. Or how cybernetic augmentations in Deus Ex take the place of a more traditional RPG system. Or the whole mercenary company aspect of Jagged Alliance.
It's obvious that a game's setting should inform its gameplay. But jrpgs really don't do this. Even jrpgs that take place in modern or futuristic settings, such as Persona or Xenoblade, still revolve around typical high fantasy cliches like dungeon crawling and god-killing shenanigans. The characters even still use medieval weaponry. Heck, Symphony of the Night is a Japanese RPG where you play as a vampire, yet you can't even bite anyone to drink blood, meaning you can't even fulfil the basic function of a vampire. How lame is that? Or take Lost Odyssey, a game where you play as immortals, yet you can somehow still die from combat.
Another baffling trope is when jrpgs take place in a world such as various Final Fantasy games, where the technology and level of civilization is far more advanced than our own, yet the world still functions like a pre-industrial society, with small settlements separated by vast, uncharted expanses of wilderness filled with wild beasts and roving bandits, and characters still using medieval weaponry. What is the point of going with a futuristic setting if it's functionally and thematically identical to a medieval fantasy world?
>post-apocalyptic smt nocturne >fictional real-world persona >steampunk resonance of fate >cyberpunk soul hackers >superhero fiction z.h.p. unlosing ranger vs. darkdeath evilman >science fiction ar nosurge >alternate history valkyria chronicles >urban fantasy the world ends with you >high fantasy dragon quest >science fantasy ffxii >in before "those don't count because they don't use their settings exactly the same way as my cherrypicked wrpgs!"

>>in before "those don't count because they don't use their settings exactly the same way as my cherrypicked wrpgs!"
Okay, genius, if Valkyria Chronicles is supposedly alternate history, then explain to me where the Jews are in the world of Valkyria Chronicles. If it really takes place in an alternate version of WW, where are they? Where are the british? The americans? The germans? The russians?
NO RACES are ever identified in VC, except for two: Darcsens and Valkyrur, none of which have ever existed in our history.
That's why it's not alternate history. Its its own completely separate fantasy world.
>post-apocalyptic >smt nocturne Wrong. Takes place in some sort of purgatory DURING the apocalypse, not after it, and doesn't explore the ethics of a post-apocalyptic civilization in any way. There is no POST-apocalypse in Nocturne because all life on the world was ended, there is no world to even return to or rebuild.
>fictional real-world >persona Again, wrong. Is fantasy. 'Fictional real world' refers to games that take place in a fictional version of the real world, without fantasy or sci-fi elements.
>steampunk >resonance of fate The game where characters use modern firearms, completely at odds with the level of technology in a steampunk setting? No.
>cyberpunk >soul hackers It has minor cyberpunk elements, but it's primarily a fantasy game and doesn't truly explore cyberpunk themes in any meaningful way.
>science fiction >ar nosurge How? Characters blatantly use magic.
Thanks for proving my point, I guess? The fact that you can't even come up with jrpgs that fit those settings only confirms the point that image was making.
Eli Richardson

>WW2 involving teenage girls in short skirts fighting on the front lines That's what makes it alternate history, retard.
The super sayian blue death lasers is far more fantasy, but that depends on how much you're willing to just put it down to japanese weirdness and if you consider that to be the major factor in the game, as opposed to the squad interaction. JP loves to have people spontaneously develop psychic ki death beams, but I don't know if that automatically turned everything into a magic fantasy.
Kevin Hughes
>>this alternative history is too alternative! REEEEEEE!!!
Do you even understand the basic concept behind alternate history? 'Alternate history' has as premise that our history happened. Then at some point, things diverged, that's where the 'alternate' comes in. Example:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionheart:_Legacy_of_the_Crusader >Lionheart's historical chronology puts forth that Richard the Lionheart's massacre of 3000 prisoners at the Siege of Acre, during the Third Crusade, was used by a villainous character as fuel for a ritual which tore the fabric of reality. This resulted in magic invading the game's world from other dimensions. The game itself takes place during the 16th century, which, due to the alternate reality setting, has been ravaged by uncontrolled magic and demonic creatures.
Another way to do alternate history is as follows:, things were always different, but the world at large is not aware of this, and history occured as we know it (except for secret happenings that we are unaware of). Example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darklands_(video_game) >The setting for Darklands is medieval Europe as the inhabitants thought the world was at the time. All the cities that one's party may visit in the game are real places that existed in the Holy Roman Empire of the 15th century. Most are in modern-day Germany, but some are within the modern borders of other countries including Denmark, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. The city names given in the game are old German names of the cities, some of which are now exonyms; the new local names are given in parentheses.
Notice the difference? Races, historical events, etc. in these games are the same as our world. VC does not have this premise at all. It's its own fantasy world, no different from something like LoTR.
>Unfortunately it's because the anime style in general has gotten mainstream. Hopefully the fad fades away and we can return to how things used to be. Indeed.
>Skyrim, Skyrim: Enhanced Edition (which was free if you already owned the original game + dlc), SkyrimVR >"six different times"

>>persona >Again, wrong. Is fantasy. 'Fictional real world' refers to games that take place in a fictional version of the real world, without fantasy or sci-fi elements. P3-5 Is urban-fantasy, though it's questionable if P4's setting can be considered urban.
Jackson Fisher
>P3-5 Is urban-fantasy Okay, but that's a different subgenre.
I was talking about the subgenre of fiction that doesn't involve magical or sci-fi elements. There are plenty of wrpgs that have such a setting, but I can't think of a single jrpg like that
