I'm never letting this go. A low-poly 3D Sonic game that emphasizes momentum and level geometry rather than linear speed. A true 3D Sonic, not the fake bullshit we've gotten the last 20 years.
We deserve it. The world deserves it. Sonic deserves it.
This was supposed to be one of the links OP is a faggot
Jacob Reyes
Modernfags will screech at you but you're 100% correct. I hope there's fans that get to work on a project such as this in the future. 3D Sonic needs its Mania, and it's been overdue for a long time.
Lucas Miller
SA1 still had a bit of the old 2D Sonic DNA in it. Speed and terrain affected your trajectory, albeit to a much lesser extent. It's so frustrating to see a glimmer of what's possible in SA1, only for 3D Sonic to move further and further away from it in subsequent games.
The sad thing is that with something like Lost World, you can see hints of pathing and non-linear stage design, but the core gameplay is so fucked that it doesn't matter and modern Sonic Team automate almost every single possible thing relating to speed that they possibly can.
Utopia is a nice proof of concept but has nothing to really make use of it. If it had been released as like an open source gameplay basis for people to make levels and content for then hey, we'd be seeing a lot of cool shit after the past couple years since it came out. But it's been almost dead silence since then, and people have made their own modern Sonic engines to compensate, with at least one of them having actual level design.
Jaxson Barnes
I do hear the next demo is slated for this year at least, I guess better to take one's time than rushing things to shit
Nolan Price
Soul is outlawed to make room for more consumerism
I totally forgot about Utopia desu I would have included it if I'd remembered
Also if you have time to kill (and let's face it you're on Yea Forums so you definitely do) this video is an awesome pitch for how a 3D Sonic would work. I've watched it a couple times and literally gotten mad it doesn't exist.
>Utopia is a nice proof of concept Shut the fuck up. What the hell about it is a proof of concept? It's a fully-explorable Point A to Point B level with wide branching paths to explore. Are you really going to sit here with a straight face and reply with some retarded buzzwords like "it's a sandbox" or something? Are you really gonna sit there and have the audacity to say that the modern Sonic style 3D engine garbage oversaturating fan games have something remotely worthy of the name level design? Again, shut the fuck up. Anyone who things Lost World has some level of redeemability really needs to stop trying to engage in these kinds of discussions.
Ok come on, not even Lange himself acts like this about the game and I've seen how he acts sometimes.
Adrian Turner
It has no level design. It just has a bunch of shit slapped together for what is essentially a physics and gameplay demonstration to the point that the devs outright admitted that a theoretical finalized Sonic Utopia would have nothing like the Green Hill in the demo. I don't know what it is about Utopia that drives people to bitch about everyone else in both hating and defending it.
Kayden Scott
I guess people just really want it to be a thing and will fight for it to be a thing, even if it means deflecting criticism aggressively? Thing is though, the main developers are now working at wayforward so it's something they'd only be able to do in their spare time. I love Utopia too but I really don't see it becoming an official game like Mania did unless some sort of blue moon happens.
I don't know why people get so uppity about it, it's very clearly built to be an Alpha style mishmash of assets to just show what the game would be like. The level itself has no flow or unified direction because that's not what it was made for.
Maybe it's because Utopia is fleshed out with textures and music? Like it LOOKS like a final game level so people interpret it as such?
Blake Bailey
I think some people also only like it as an excuse to shitpost and nothing else. You ever heard of Hessefags? Those people who probably don't even like Sonic but use Mania as an excuse to shit on 3D Sonic fans? Utopiafags are pretty much the prototype of that. Don't worry, I'm not implying Mania or Utopia are bad, it's just a trend I've noticed.
Hudson Hall
meanwhile last I saw them /sthg/ were on the opposite side of the fence, basically demonizing all of 2D as upsurping their franchise so they would bitch about Mania or Utopia at the slightest provocation. considering they have lurkers repost Yea Forums Sonic threads that mention them they'll probably either get a laugh out of even mentioning this or have at least one shitposter flip out
Wouldn't call Shuffle based, but I do think Sonic would benefit from a cel-shaded style, with some Valkyria Chronicles-style shaders for something like Riders' opening.
Grayson Thomas
Yeah, I think this guy might legitimately be onto something.
Jack Jones
Dammit user, dammit. You're right, tho knowing about Sonic from the Genesis would make it even more based. I grew up with the Sega Genesis games and my favorites were 2, 3, S&K, and S&K+2&3. user, do you remember the first time watching this?
>that part where you first see Sonic >that music >KNUCKLES! Remember thinking how next-gen and awesome this was? Holy shit, all of our favorite characters look so awesome in actual 3D. I remember thinking that the actual graphics of the game were gonna be like this.
>Sonic Shuffle I remember I went to BlockBuster once and rented it and was so excited to get home because I didn't hear anything about the game in any gaming magazines. >mfw it's just mario party I was so bummed...
This guy may be on to something. I haven't even watched the rest of the video yet but not only do I know exactly which games he's talking about, I see where he thinks this is headed.
Stop having huge 2D sections in modern games as well.
Oliver Thompson
Yeah, I was hoping someone could maybe finally come closer to solving this mystery.
Carter Martinez
At least Unleashed usually kept 2D sections as more of a camera shift rather than slowing everything to a complete and utter crawl (spring sections like in Jungle Joyride aside). Every game that followed literally just turned the camera shift into a SLOW DOWN warning for platforming escapades.
Owen Cox
Sonic should've been on the same exact level as Super Mario, just like it was back in the day. Unfortunately, Sega failing with their console business impacted that greatly, however Sonic should've bounced back.
Aiden Martinez
Sonic Utopia is basically the only upcoming game I'm looking forward to That demo is so fucking fun
Henry Wood
This applies to every era, or just era in general
1: Classic games 2: SA1 (classic gameplay + pointless gimmicks for padding and shilling the system's specs) 3: 06 4: Unleashed 5:Colors to Forces
Like I said this can be even within eras like Sonic 1 to CD for 1 and 2, for what it is SA1/2 to Heroes then to 06, then Unleashed and soforth for 3D Sonic. Even Advance could go down the line of the first 2 for step 1 and 2, with 4 being what created Rush from Advance 2/3.
It's like they want to make new things, don't know how to do those new things well, and then slop out a good will product without much thought on a consistent basis. It's a miracle the series evolved in the first place, but then that evolution had major sacrifices.
Xavier Phillips
utopia sucks, get the fuck over it you big gay baby
Grayson Murphy
No need to be that way user, besides, the other user left a long time ago.
Thomas Ortiz
Sonic Adventure 2 was already the beginning of the end, Sonic fans just didn't realize it at the time. Sonic Team learned all the wrong lessons from SA1, a theme that would carry over into subsequent Sonic titles for years to come.
People tend to look back on flawed first installments fondly if the series improves over time. See games like the first Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted. But if the series regresses like 3D Sonic, those first installments tend to be looked at less fondly. Which is a shame because SA1 was a really solid framework to build a 3D Sonic franchise on.
Anthony Campbell
I'm going to watch the video but does it say anything about SEGA likely making this happen because they rush Sonic Team to make games nearly every year back in the day?
Nicholas Torres
a lot of the level is just sandbox/bloat but it completely works as a linear level if you're speedrunning it there's lots of precision jumping and momentum managing, it's super fun
Even besides the likelihood of rushing back then (06 was by all means not rushed so much as had its time wasted), in the present they have plenty of time for their products after Generations, but have none of the talent that made decent games still around. Because SEGA won't stop mismanaging their company and putting their competent talent on other things like the Olympics games.
Elijah Cox
>Sonic Adventure 2 was already the beginning of the end, Sonic fans just didn't realize it at the time. I did. The fact they forced the Knuckles and Tails style levels on you in the campaign was a red flag for me.
it's always fucking IGN like the time they didn't know about the Run Button of LW all review, so a guy's just walking across collapsing platforms until he inexplicably turns backwards into the pit for some reason, like he was playing shit on purpose
Brody Anderson
I did this as a kid too I figured it out on my third attempt though.

Remember when Sonic Colors was said to have finally broken the Sonic Cycle?
Ryan Foster
I would forgive them if it was that red and white cylinder that you can manipulate by pressing up and down while STANDING on it. How many of you niggers got caught up there trying to create downward momentum by jumping? I'm still embarrassed to this day over how long it took me to figure it out.
Michael Bailey
>How many of you niggers got caught up there trying to create downward momentum by jumping? Present
I used to dread the thought of losing my save file because of that spot alone. I had completed multiple 100% completion play throughs before I understood how that thing worked.
>A low-poly 3D Sonic game that emphasizes momentum and level geometry rather than linear speed. DUDE IF I USE GAMING LINGO THAT MEANS IM RIGHT ABOUT SUBJECTIVE THINGS LIKE ENTERTAINMENT HAHA
Jason Young
i want to know more about this image
Elijah Rogers
Are you honestly implying that the Modern/Boost/Temple Run style of Sonic game is as entertaining as a game that would ape the core mechanics of 2D Sonic? I mean those games are fun but they're as deep as a puddle. They ran their course back in 2011.
