well to answer your question her death did provide shock value and sadness. a display that the world lost its innocence and capacity to care for the weak in a single moment. it gives joel a personal motive for what he sees in ellie later on. to answer the question as to why tlou stars a (hot) mid 40s-50s man, the reason is because the writer of the game, neil druckmann, is a father and was writing a story about what he knows as a father. i think in several interviews naughty dog stated as such that the game is very much reflective of the fact that the studio is mostly parents now rather than bachelors like it was in the psx era. the game is about parenthood set in a zombie apocalypse.
so, the reason why the game doesn't star sarah is because that's not something that druckmann felt like writing about, probably because he's not a teen girl, and he wrote a middle aged daddy because he is a middle aged daddy.
the gameplay of tlou is ok. it's very standard. i would call it mediocre. it is a part of the third person shooter genre, which routinely puts out games that are middling in mechanics but great in every other aspect.

I really disagree with OP. The intro of tlou is one of the best in games, comparable to stuff like FF6 or Half-Life 2. Playing as the little girl at first lets you feel the stress and fear of being in that situation, seeing the explosion in the distance and then gradually driving into Austin completely helplessly to be suddenly put in control of Joel amid a fire and an onrush of infected is really cool, and you can die in it as Joel if you try to which is a nice realistic touch, even though the game is definitely pushing you into set pieces with the infected and narrow escapes, etc. The death isn't felt from the player's perspective - we didn't know the girl long enough to form much of a bond - but the acting of Troy Baker really sells the moment Joel realizes she's dead and that I felt very empathically, even though I've never lost a child before. Most people I think can sympathize with Joel. If you don't, you're probably a Nazi drumpftard orange man bad /pol/lack incel.

I get they were stupid, but he killed like 6 million people just to save one life, including a doctor. He also tortured people to tell him where Ellie was and then killed them after promising he'd let them live if they told her where he was.
I'm sure he felt his actions were justifiable, but he's not a good person, he's a murderer who believes he's justified. No different to the Fireflies scientists who wanted to kill Ellie because they thought it was justified.
Also there is no proof that they would have not progressed towards a cure if they had gone ahead with the dissection of her brain, it might have helped gradually progress towards a cure. You can't blame them for their line of thinking when they live in an apocalyptic world where most of the population has already been killed off.

The fireflies shouldn't have to immediately kill her. They only needed a tissue sample to start, meaning a brain biopsy. Killing her is a very permanent solution that they decided on very quickly. The group was strained and unstable and putting all their hopes on Ellie giving them a quick miracle cure. Fungal vaccines are still ultra cutting edge medicine when the outbreak happens in this game (and even today), and they never had time to develop them to the point where some amateur doctors in the fireflies (who can't even do a biopsy) could create them from one immune patient's samples
