Agreed. Super Mario Bros only gets a 7/10 from me because of this. If they didn't waste my time with the whole princess captured by evil turtle story it'd easily be a 9.5/10
Then No Man Sky must be a good game then.
Definately an after thought, its the control and how the gameplay feels way before somebodies shit OC story
Looks like someone didn't take Logic 101
thats not how logic works, kid
bing bing wahoo, fellow redditor!
A great story could easily make a mediocre game a worthwhile experience.
There are a few games/series I continued to play because I was invested in the story and the gameplay was at least decent enough that it didn't make me want to drop the game completely. The gameplay was still a significant factor, but the story was far from irrelevant.
Irrelevant to what? The only "goal" of a video game is to amuse yourself, There's no practical result you're trying to achieve. If the story amuses you then it's not irrelevant
Agreed, Try posting that on ResetERA. Actually please post this on ResetERA, I want to see the trannies rage.

I disagree. Every game worth a shit has a story, even the tiny stuff.
Do you think Super Mario Bros. would've been as memorable as it was without that identity? You are "the plumber". You must save "the princess" from "the monster". That's a story. People genuinely have memories of fighting Bowser. Would getting to 8-8 have been the same if there was no reason to get there, and the game hadn't established any kind of goal you were trying to get to?
Now, I do agree that if your story is causing the gameplay to suffer, you're doing it wrong, yes. Story shouldn't be the forefront of a game.
8-4, I mean, sorry.
Nah, it's one thing to play a game where you fight a generic giant brain in the end (Metroid), it's another to fighting fucking Dracula.
Story matters more than people pretend it does.
Nah
It's not really necessary, but context massively elevates the gameplay
No, if its a fucking slog of a game, no matter how fun the gameplay is, i just drop it because i dont care what happens.
Story has kept me going through bad parts in good game
Whether that was because the story was good or I was just invested is up to you to interpret
I don't forgive you
No, but my problem is with "in any game".
As with every other element, sometimes it matters, sometimes it's worthless.
I don't view it as a terribly important factor the majority of the time but as I don't have crippling autism, I acknowledge that my fellow man can feel differently about what parts of their entertainment they value.
Kindof, I want a game to just provide a good setting, there can be story told in the background but it shouldnt be the point of the game. Its gotten to a point where I am actually annoyed when I am not in control of the character for whatever reason or am not immediately given control and playing the game.
Story gives context for what you're doing and gives you a reason to care about what you're doing. An example of what I'm talking about is a game called Cortex Command. It's a game with a lot of potential, but aside from the terrible controls, I had no motivation to play the game because it had no story mode, so I had no goal to work towards. So no, story is not irrelevant, and could in fact be very important.
