I guess I missed the boat, and it was a good thing.

No, it operates on a daily system where you get 3 dailies every day. You can even pick a "solo" option which gives you less gold, but you can just play 3 matches against bots and you're done with your dailies. Grinding gives you almost nothing, except for some ranked milestones that are either card backs or even less than daily rewards.

I know these type of games, and there's no way in hell you can get by with only doing dailies, there has to be a catch

The closest thing to a catch there is would be that the leader skins people vote for in the anniversary polls have to be pulled from packs gacha style with a 0.03% chance of them appearing, but the game drowns you in packs, 10 free for every expansion release, 5 more free for the mini-expansion which adds more high rarity cards to the expansion, and you get a pack every five days for free except on the third set where you get a ticket for the arena mode which you can exchange for a free pack.

The only ads I've seen someone do online that were good was Cumtown. Betdsi, Bluechew, and Mac Weldon ads were sometimes funnier than the show itself.

I prefer Patreon/sponsor shilling over people whoring themselves out to the lowest common denominator so they can make money by getting into the front page.

You actually can. Of course, when you start, you won't be able to make t1 decks for all classes, but you'll at least have one or two good or decent decks. This means it may be a little bit difficult to get dailies done when you get started, but like that guy said, you can always do solo dailies. So yeah, you can easily keep up with the game without spending a penny if you so desire just by doing your dailies and participating in the events. They also give out free stuff all the time. Shadowverse is actually quite generous in that sense. Now, having fun playing it is entirely subjective.
