Half-Life's level design was a major downgrade from other FPS before it. It takes place in Black Mesa, this massive facility, but since it's completely linear, it doesn't take any advantage of that like Hexen, Strife and System Shock did with their hub worlds. At the same time, Half-Life also lacks the variety other FPS like Duke Nukem and Blood had with their unique self-contained levels, nor does it have something like Unreal's epic journey across an alien planet, or Deus Ex's globe-trotting conspiracy chase. It's the worst of both worlds.
Imagine liking this shitty game.

>STILL talking about games that came out 20+ years ago

It's time to let it go, boomer

imagine being a faggot like op

Yep, just a shitty Doom clone.

You’re right OP.

based
cringe hlniggers.

>Old video game BAD
What a surprise, except HL1 wasn't bad, better than HL2 actually, but it lacks replayability (if you don't know how to mod)

Its shit because its not an Immersion Sim.

Exactly. HL was one of the games that started gaming's decline in the late 90s and its eventual death/undeath (bunch of shit games liked by idiots) in the 2000s and on.

Schizo user how many years are you going to keep this shit up?
did gabe newell kill your parents?

see

ion fury does the exact same thing HL did

i'm not going to stop until this board hates hl and cs.

I hope by CS you mean CSGO

>zoomers are now trying psyop campaigns to convince boomers their games are bad

old cs too.

i think it has the atmosphere and immersion of something like SysSho2 in building a believable space but still has the focus on great moving and shooting as something like Quake, and the map design is a vehicle for that rather than those two aspects being at odds. it's an excellent juxtaposition that masterfully combines those two approaches and i think your criticism is incredibly short-sighted in disregarding that fact.

all the best.

FPS games just keep getting more and more linear.

I hope he means Counter Strike. Everyone who plays that game is a fat, four-eyed nerd with massive amounts of autism.

>Hoverboat
>Hovercraft
I can tell a brit bong made this image

imagine defending the linearization and casualization of fps.
FUCK HLNIGGERS.

imagine not knowing how to mod

,mod don't fix the shitty level design.

Is your time really that worthless?

>like Hexen
Hexen's level design shouldn't be taken as an example by anyone

better than movie life levels.

Are you zoomers going to deny the bad impact hl had on gaming?
Do you faggots think this game is not as bad as cod or halo?

he's been doing this shit for nearly two years, posting screenshots of forum posts that agree with him, "refute this hlniggers" and to be honest I'm half convinced he is a half life fan considering how he constantly bumps hl threads or creates them.

>Switch hunting
>Better than anything

>playing an FPS without Immersive Sim elements
Why?

>alien was a bad movie guys it just took place in one spaceship and a few minutes in a cave

>if there isn't multiple paths then it's SHIT

I knew it was going to become pasta, it was one of the dumber posts in that thread

half life is just as dumbed down as bioshock.

When is Yea Forums gonna realize HL1 was better than 2?

When is Yea Forums gonna realize both hl are shit and that games like system shock and thief are superior and deserve more threads?

Doesn't seem that linear to me.

Attached: hlmap.jpg (2000x1930, 891K)

When are you going to get some mental health care, OP?

just admit hl,cs, bioshock, mgs, deus ex HR and MD are fucking garbage.

are you the same user that makes threads shitting on CS and comparing it to quake ?

Attached: 1533027972366.jpg (1000x991, 127K)

The world is so much better realized and immersive than earlier PC games.
With maybe the exception of System Shock, which was EXTREMELY ambitious and not really productive to use as a base for comparison.
Besides, the shooting and controls in System Shock 1 were trash.

>Hexen
>good level design
lmao

>Half Life does not have a journey across an alien planet.
Damn shitposter-kun, that's some real shit right there.

>post shitpost thread on /vr/
>"n-not enough (You)'s!"
>copy-paste thread on Yea Forums

he will never seriously reply to this but you're right

>FPSs where you aren't supposed to directly confront enemies
>STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T
>HL & CS is garbage
I'll admit the episodes and CSGO suck
>MGS is garbage
which one retard?
>Deus Ex HR and MD is garbage
HR's combat is garbage unless if you have an OP weapon, haven't played MD yet

now wait a minute

Half-Life having the Black Mesa Research Facility looking like a place where Actual Scientists do Actual Science gave games immersion on a level that was never seen before. Prior to Half-Life, video game worlds in shooters always looked like video game worlds because shooters were at their core, power fantasies where the point was on just shooting enemies and having fun. And those games never desired to affect the player on a cerebral or emotional level, either.

Half-Life deliberately changed all of that because it did what no other shooter did before: it had variety. Variety in gameplay, variety in tone, variety in environments. People always overlook this, but Half-Life was half action shooter, half survival horror. Suddenly, the player could be vulnerable. Suddenly, there was pleasure in just admiring the environment and figuring out what the people living in them used them for. Suddenly, different encounters in a first-person shooter forced you to take on different tacts as a player. Sometimes you could go all-out, guns blazing. Sometimes you were low on ammo and had to make every shot count. Sometimes you were overwhelmed and had to use traps and grenades to pick off the opposition. Sometimes you had to turn the enemy's own weapons against them or use the environment in creative ways to take them out. Sometimes you were scared shitless. And NONE of that could have EVER worked if Half-Life had level design like the old-school shooters that came before it.

(cont.)

>Half-Life deliberately changed all of that because it did what no other shooter did before: it had variety
Strife says hello

And it was for the betterment of gaming as a whole. This game and Halo after it, and System Shock 2, and Deus Ex, and Thief, eh fuck it, might as well throw in Metal Gear Solid and Max Payne while I'm at it (perhaps Grand Theft Auto III as well) - helped turn shooters - and in fact action games as a whole, regardless of camera position - from one-note blast fests into the premier narrative genre of the medium; Why do you think adventure games died around the same time? Suddenly you could have intelligent, emotionally resonant storytelling in games that featured more and better gameplay than what could be provided by a point-and-click interface.

These games also helped give shooters more complexity as well. In old-school shooters, you move around so fast that the designs of the levels become meaningless as every gunfight boils down to the same repeated motions of shooting while backpedaling or circle-strafing. Nowadays, shooters require so many more things for the player to do in order to win. And by starting the trend of slowing down gameplay, these were the games, and out of all of them Half-Life, in particular, that elevated shooters, and video games as a whole, to new commercial and artistic heights.

To make a long story short: those games in your post suck, OP. Half-Life is the real deal!

>pick the wrong dialogue response
>game over

Duke Nukem you nigger.

Oh look... ANOTHER thread bashing Half-Life. Go away, Epic Games employee.

tl;dr half-life killed monkey island

It was completely unlike any experience in gaming before it. It was fucking amazing.

Almost every game inspired by it was shit though.
