I enjoyed Duke Atomic edition but thought the hitscanning in Blood was ridiculous.
It's pretty good. The Penetrator runs out of ammo quickly and I feel as if they could've done more with the guns. Map design is great but finding enemies shooting at you from a distance is hard and they can spawn in after certain triggers, refilling previously cleared areas - that can annoy me at times but I like it overall as it keeps the player on their toes.

The Ion Bow's secondary fire feels pretty BFG-y to me. And the rocket launcher lack honestly makes you be more creative with the weapons. It's the first FPS in a while where I've not only had to use all the weapons throughout the game, but enjoyed doing so.

but yeah the Dark engine was built by people who only loosely understood how Quake worked and regretted every part of the design

I'm not zoomer, but I am 21 and grew up playing console games. Generally speaking, of the NuBoomercore games available, Ion Maiden is probably the overall best in terms of sheer effort. Like, Dusk is really solid, Amid Evil is overall great, but Ion Maiden is really something utterly superb. It's only real problems is that I feel that even on normal the damage is way too high, it makes the gameplay kinda slow paced because im afraid of getting jumped around a corner and watching my health dip from 80 to 30.
Also it doesn't run at a solid 60 on my GTX 1060 16GB RAM AMD Ryzen 5 setup and I have no idea why, it dips to 50 at times and it makes me angry

i understand i need to git gud but i actually don't understand how i guess? In most games when enemies shoot at you, the bullets will ricochet near you and you have some idea where they're coming. Since this is on build engine there's nothing like that, you have to rely on seeing the tiny little sprite off in the distance and chances are they will get some damage down on you before you see them. It seems like it's particularly bad in open areas where I'm just getting chipped away at from all different directions since there's no way to actually avoid enemy damage, enemies hit you the same whether you're moving or not. It seems like to avoid damage you have to completely stay out of enemy line of sight, pop out around corners and stuff.

cool game overall though, just don't really understand how to deal with the hitscan stuff

Ironically the controller aiming might offer a more authentic boomer experience. A lot of people didn't use mouselook back then, it really became popular in the Quake era.

Well first I tried to use the fans to lift myself up, then I tried to jump onto of one of the barrels to get into position, then I tried looking for another way out; then finally I realised that you need to push the barrels out and make platforms.

AE was boring front to back. Maybe had a couple of interesting levels towards the end. Dusk had a great opening chapter and then fell off immediately. Conversely, I'm having a blast with Ion Fury in a way that neither of those games were even close to delivering on. You're out of your mind if you think Dusk or AE are even comparable to the level of quality, fun, and polish that Ion Fury has.

When I beat Dusk, I said "that was nice" and uninstalled it.

When I beat Ion Fury, I started replaying it after a few hours break. I don't do that often.

You need to learn what to look for. Crack in the wall? It can be blown open. Fire extinguisher? Likewise. Is there a ledge out somewhere you can't see? Probably leads to something good. Is there a room you can see into but haven't seen a door for? Poke around, there's an entrance somewhere.
