They also barely have anything to do with the actual plot and concepts of Dune, outside of "shit is sandy, yo !".
I mean fuck, the entire concept of combat in Dune is that shields make ranged fighting nearly impossible (remember how the Harkonnen had to literally dig artillery pieces out of museum for their operations ?), yet all the Dune RTS are classic warfare.
Another big aspect is that the setting is SciFi yet computer-ish stuff is a religious taboo, limiting every machine to whatever a human pilot can handle by hand, yet a lot of tech in those RTS clearly use advanced electronics.

Dune 2000. It's bad cause it feels like a reskinned RA1. While preserving some of the original things from Dune II like having to construct slabs, Starport and Fremen, the game itself feels too much like RA1 in terms of unit selection and overall balance. The fact that Siege Tanks are now reskinned RA1 Arty and Missile Launchers being reskinned TD MLRS didn't really add to my enjoyment. The cutscenes are excellent mind you. But overall it's a medicore entry in the time where the main team was busy working on Tiberium Sun

Dune is one of the few series where you can easily drop out at any time if you stop liking it, adn the first book gives you a good feeling of what the series is about. All you need to say is "read book one, if you like it, keep reading till 6 or until you think it turns too weird'

And Dune CD's plot is nearly opposite to the books.
In the books, Atreides get Arrakis offered after the Harkonnen got told to fuck off, *then* the Harkonnen come back with disguised Imperial troops, *then* the Atreides survivors join the Fremen.
In Dune CD, Harkonnen still hold the planet, the Atreides gather a Fremen army nearly immediately, and the emperor stay there watching happily as long as he get his spice.

Frank's books are appropriately respected as one of the top science-fiction novels. I find Frank Herbert's description of the Fremen fucking weird.
They clearly have an Arabic language, yet their culture is closest to a nomadic Berber tribe and even the whole fremen = freeman thing and the harvesting of dead bodies for blood as a replacement for water.
Not sure if Herbert poorly researched and lumped Arabs and Berbers together or if he just thought combining them together and making a Lawrence of Arabia but in sci-fi setting was cool.
