only episode 1 is designed to be pistol started. you only can do it easily in episodes 2 and 3 because the game is piss easy, not because it was designed for it

This isn't necessary to appreciate Doom, and the pacing of going out of your way to explore that much on a first playthrough is pretty unnatural.
The rest I agree with. Unironically kill yourselves if you use vertical aiming in doom 1 or 2.
This makes me feel better about playing with gzdoom+brutaldoom at all times because its more fun
