Enemy design got worse and the game became more cinematic in each release. Haven't played 4, I didn't really care for 3 which killed my interest in playing 4, especially after hearing of all its problems.
If you're saying 1 would be better if it was released on PS2 because of its graphics, I'd have to disagree. PS1 graphics helped the otherworld's atmosphere IMO.

At this point we have no idea who is making the next Silent Hill, where they are from, and who they are collaborating with from the old Team Silent. If we're lucky, we'll find out at Gamescom. Masahiro Ito worked on Metal Gear Survive, but I think it was just contract work.
Some people don't know this, but Silent Hill Homecoming/Origins/Smattered Memories/Downpour were all unreasonably budget constrained. The developers for Downpour cop a lot of blame for what amounted to Konami not being willing to spend the money necessary to finish the game. They were pumping all their funds into Kojima's pet projects at the expense of everything else. This is why they were unwilling to delay the HD collection, too.

Apparently Ito has worked in some capacity on basically everything Konami has made over the past decade. Including the cancelled Silent Hill projects. The one that emerged recently was a project in 2013. He is apparently in discussion with his bosses to release more concept art from that game.

They didn't have a choice. The project needed to be delayed another year or so, but Konami demanded they ship. And then wouldn't allow them to release much in the way of patches. Konami simply didn't care. Why do you think Bluepoint's MGS 3 is so fucked up? Because Konami had unreasonable deadlines and excessively tight budgets and a lack of giving a shit before shipping and giving even fewer shits after the game shipped.
I don't trust Konami to handle any of it's IPs anymore.

This, it's always so generic and boring. Say whatever you want about Silent Hill, but it was never boring to look at, especially with all the background fuckery going on in 2 and 3. Even western SH games looked like Condemned or some shit.
Setpieces are American in appearance, sure (the town, school, hospital etc are obviously not Japanese), but you can't say the environments don't have their own unique spin or perspective that the Japanese team brings to those western places. Or what, blood, unrecognizable bodies and rusty fans are "western aesthetics"?

There's an over-the-shoulder camera option in the extra menu after you've beaten the game. Not exactly the same, but maybe you'd like it if you didn't know about it already.
If they avoid the beloved fan favorites but keep to Team Silent material, and actually make a half-decent product, that could work.

Not a single SH game needs a remake. They all have their own distinct style and they rise up despite their flaws. Even 4, with its absurdly long escort mission, doesn't require a remake to improve, it is good as it is.
What the games do need is proper remasters, which is what I bet Konami is doing. The writings on the wall with their flood of remasters. At Gamecom they'll announce full physical MGS and Silent Hill collections.
Issue is, will they give the people remastering enough time.

Jacob's Ladder is the reason why Silent Hill has hospitals and nurses and that sense of unreality. The portrayal of disturbed sex, often veiled or obscured or abstracted that recurs in the games has a great deal in common with the infamouse dance scene from Jacob's Ladder youtube.com
Of course bits and pieces of the developer's own culture trickles into the games from time to time, but Silent Hill almost bends over backwards not to be Japanese at times. It takes influence from everything EXCEPT contemporary Japanese horror almost all of the time.

Out of my element here, but wasn't that kind of alienating, industrial environment somewhat of a Japanese concern at the turn of the century? You watch stuff like Ringu, Pulse, Dark Water, or play Silent Hill or even Resident Evil, and it feels like there's a lot of anxiety invested in clinical modern spaces, especially with so much of the sound design rooted in electronic noise, clattering and creaking metal, dripping water, etc. I know you get that shit in films like Event Horizon or Seven, but it seems like the Japanese were going hard on it, too.

Probably, but it was also being done in other countries earlier than that. Akira Yamaoka has even said Trent Reznor is his biggest influence.

From what we saw of PT, Kojima completely missed the point of Silent Hill.
In a meta sense, he missed the point of all the characters being average people by making a major TV actor the main character.
But in game he also missed a lot of thing. A lot of the puzzles relied on being meta or breaking the 4th wall, like the one puzzle with X on the photo, talking into a microphone, zooming in on the main menu, pretending the game crashed, none of these things are something a Silent Hill game would do. No SH game before relied on breaking the 4th wall to spook the player, they came up with actually smart puzzles. A 4th wall breaking puzzle isn't smart, at least not in the way Kojima does it. I feel like he just puts them in because he merely thinks they're smart, so he can fellate himself some more.
Continuing, Kojima uses stereotypical jumpscares here. They're not even unpredictable like the few times 1-4 used them (and they were used well there), it's just blatant. Like the barely open door that gets shut quickly. It's expected, it's what SH1 subverted 20 years ago.
Then there's the fact that Kojima reportedly only saw the dogshit movie and never actually played the games. I would doubt this, but he clearly didn't know who Masahiro Ito was or he wanted to show off his celebrity friends and bring in Junji Ito. I bet Ito's monster design, while decent, would have no relation to the state of the town.

Based on MGSV, where he created multiple completely pointless characters, one being literal fapbait, and I feel like that was the complete extent of their characters. Based on what we have seen of Death Stranding, a game about Kojima showing off his famous friends and trying to be a vague rusemaster because he likes it when people call him smart, when he really isn't, he just knows how to waste a lot of money.
