I have defeated him on Crash Cove, Mystery Caves adn some more random tracks, but I can't for the love of god, even unlock his ghost on Oxide station.
There's something I'm fundamentally doing wrong and I can't figure out what. So what's the trick?
The trick is to vastly improve thy skillset. Hold SF or BF as long as you can on tracks, take shortcuts etc. Really thats all there is to it.
Do you know about air braking and u-turning? Perfecting those two are all you need for maintaining USF on Oxide Station.
Oxide Station is the worst one by far, probably spent more time on that one than all the other CTR tracks combined
Trick is to nail the S turn bit at the beginning and then to keep blue flame as long as possible after the jump. Last one especially will gain you a lot of time even on one lap.
You need 3:34 to unlock the ghost iirc, then his time is 3:32

Believe it or not, speed characters can beat Tropy on Oxide Station without drifting if you hop around turns properly. Look it up online. If they can do it without drifting than you have no excuse for not beating him even when only drifting on the easy sections.
Focus on not slamming into walls.
You just need to learn the track well enough that you can maintain USF on it for a decent chunk of the last two laps. Just run through it over and over to learn when and where to hop and air brake especially in the last section.

They're essentially the same technique, but one is done in the air and the other grounded.

Press down and a direction on the D-Pad (you can do this on the joystick too but it's less reliable), then release X and press Square, as long as you don't stop inputting down you won't lose any speed and you'll do a pretty right turn, allowing you to get through hairpins easily. You need to have some amount of reserves stored for this as you'll be letting go of X, since if you don't have any you'll just stop.
>Air-braking
While you're in midair from a hop, release X and hold Square, you won't lose speed and you'll be able to make much tighter turns. Remember that you must release Square before you land or you'll lose your reserves. As an extra warranty, you can also input down while you do this, just like with u-turning, so that you don't lose your reserves upon landing if you slip up.
That should about cover it.
Can you translate this for the Switch version?
You’ve probably noticed that breaking lets you turn very tightly. You can actually do this same turning maneuver in the air, and doing it in the air lets you preserve speed and boost. This technique is calling airbraking.
If you hold backwards while break turning you also preserve your boost, even on the ground. By holding backwards the shape of the turn will change from ‘skidding in your original direction while changing the angle of your cart’ to an extremely tight U shaped turn. This is called U-turning, and it’s how people perform those insanely tight turns online (such as the end of Hot Air Skyway) without losing their boost. U-Turning can also be done in the air. In fact, it’s easier to do in the air.
To recap, u-turning and air braking are turning maneuvers that REQUIRE letting go of the gas and hitting the breaks. Two things let you keep your boost when hitting the break:
>Being in the air
>Holding backwards
By using one or the other, you can airbrake or U-turn. By combining both, you can U-turn in the air.
Performing a sharp U-turn is very difficult with the analog stick, as going too far left or right won’t register as holding back anymore. Try practicing it with the D-pad to remove the room for error that the analog stick introduces.
If you can’t replicate a U-turn even after all of that, load up a stage with a boost pad. Drive over it and hold backwards+left on the D-pad and slam the brakes the instant you touch it. Don’t worry about maintaining the speed, just observe the turning angle. Your goal is to do that in the air.
On the U-turning section:

Regrettably I don't have any webms to offer visual aid, which I believe would be helpful.
The most important part is keeping the blue flame long enough, if you suck at U-turning like I do you can just jump into the turns after you land the big jump, you just need to learn the right angles. The time for unlocking him is also like 2 seconds out of beating him so doing that is the easy part. Also, go beat some of the Nitro Kart tracks to relax, they will also help you practice.
I would recommend not over relying on jumping, however. Sometimes you can build more reserves through three perfect boosts in the air than from the fall boost.
You have to be aware of how much you have left so you don't just run out of USF mid-fall, for example. Midair 'drifting' would fix that.
If reserve upkeep is a problem I'd recommend practicing with Accel or Speed characters to get used to the drifting angle and building reserves on straights.

I'm holding out for hope that Beenox gets off their asses and actually brings something worthwhile to the game other than GPs with no new modes or fixes.
Stop pressing the acceleration button after the blue flame jump in antigrav. Drift into the next boost pad and only then press the acceleration button again. This lets you drift really tight and you can maintain blue flame further into the track more consistently. This is the bare minimum you have to do to unlock N.Tropy's ghost, elite players will maintain this blue flame through the whole track.
To defeat tropy just maintain this flame up to the tight turn after the segment littered with boost pads. Don't hit walls. Jump drops when you can't drift.

Practice, give it a while to get used to how they turn.
It's really just getting used to their angling as they're powersliding. They're absolute units once you master that. Give yourself a lot of leeway before you enter a turn and for sharper turns see

Are you drifting/boosting every chance you possibly get? You need to build up reserves by doing this so you can hold Sacred Fire/Ultimate Sacred Fire for a long time on tracks. Also, Oxide Station is the hardest track to unlock him on so don’t let that beat you down.

However I'm at an objective disadvantage because when stats were arbitrarily assigned to characters he was given one that makes him worse than literally everyone else in the lobby. Champion kart isn't really flexing at all when it's braindead easy to get. The only "flex" is digital tropy and platinum paint. Rest is easy to get.

Maintain normal fire from the first boost pad until you get stage 1 USF, then make sure you hit the second USF pad on top of the market kiosk for stage 2.
Stage 2 works exactly the same way but it’s faster, and only applies to specific pads.

I just had a race where I got squashed, bombed and orbed before reaching the first corner, and this isn't even exceptional in any way. This is how almost every single online race in Papu's Pyramid starts. It's pure fucking garbage, that's all I can say. To make things worse, the track seems to be everyone's favorite for some ungodly reason and every single lobby votes for it without expection regardless of what else is available. Whenever I see Papu's Pyramid in the track selection I always know that's it going to get picked and it's going to be an awful race, and I'm correct every single time.Why the fuck do people like this track so much?
People have been predicting that Beenox altered the CTTR inclusion roster by mixing up characters instead of following game order. October can be an introduction of delayed fan favorites of Brio and Nina.
That leaves the inevitable CTTR GP with only Von Clutch and Pasadena as already-established racers, which is why that datamine is believable for Chick and Stew filling up spaces.
I'd hope for Pasadena = speed or accel, Von Clutch = balanced or accel, Chick = balanced or turning, and Stew = accel or speed.

Prehistoric Playground is much worse because hitting the first usf is required if you want to win and you'll hit it more often by waiting a few seconds at the start. Such a retarded track design.

Actually they seem to be following the CTTR Motorworld format except out of order.
Motorworld had 5 separate lands: Mystery Island the pirate section, Happily Ever Faster the fantasy section, Tyrannosaurus Wrecks the prehistoric section, Tomb Town the ancient Egypt section, and Astro Land the sci-fi section.
We already got the Egyptian and prehistoric themes out of the way and Spyro is looking to fulfill the fantasy theme. If these GPs are monthly and are scheduled year for 6 months by starting back in July, then that leaves one month open and will probably lead to an original theme for October.

I had this idea of whenever Emperor Velo gets added they could also add a complete version of Hyper Spaceway BUT between going through the portals you also visit the champion's planets, so there would be a Terra, Barin, Phenomena and Tekni section, each with a statue of the champion of that planet. It would be so long that it would only last 2 laps and it would have a more intense version of the HSW theme.
