SS modding isn't much of a thing because there hasn't been much of an opportunity for it until recently. SS1 did get a recent fan mission and I think there are 1 or 2 more in the works.
SS2 always had a level editor but that never took off compared to Thief (same engine/editor) because the structure of SS2, with its long-term RPG character building, is harder to fit into a smaller, self-contained mission, among other reasons.

Ion Fury falls short in that sense. Plus it has weak humor (half the one-liners are crap) and the weapons are nowhere even remotely close to being as fun as the Trinity's weapons. Or as memorable.

I don't think ion fury was going for the "over the top angle", just being a really well made build engine game. It's hard to look at those environments and voxels and call anything about this game lackluster, really.
And don't even bother with the humor angle, none of these games were funny, ever.
The only problems I have with the game is the pathfinding, the enemies hiding behind walls just create a ton of ambushes and unnecessary frustration. Also the aiming on the bowling bombs is kind of fucked, and they overdo it sometimes with the spider servoskulls.

Ion fury is, so is dusk. I think they went too low poly with dusk, but it plays and feels proper and most of these games have all the gameplay conventions of the shooters they're loosely aping. It's not like calling Doom 2016 a classic FPS revival when it clearly isn't.

Dusk is okay. Its weapons suffer from the same problem as Ion Fury; they're all so generic and there's only really one standout weapon in each game. It's also way too easy to get max speed and leave every enemy helpless.

Doom 2016 is basically what those old FPSes would have evolved into if they had never went away in the first place.

You could say the same for doom, I guess. Aside from the BFG there isn't any weird shit like in duke nukem, which had the shrinker and the freeze gun, and not much else. I don't think goofy guns are much of an addition to these games, just a fun spare in case the main ones run out of ammo.

Yes, but the gunship is only vulnerable at certain points that don't even make sense or seem to have a pattern, so I get my health whittled down by the constant enemies and incoming fire while only doing damage every four or five times it's flying around.

How hard is Maximum Fury? I'm on Zone 6 and I'm playing Ultra Viscera and I'm curious if maximum fury is ballbusting or not.

I don't know if there's a pattern to what order the attacks are done in, but it will always do the same attack in whatever location. Just shoot it in the butt with your chaingun.

Probably, but it's a different thing on its own. I love that game, but pretending it holds the same gameplay conventions is disingenuous. It relies on locked down areas more than exploration. I see it more as a progression of painkiller and some areas in serious sam.

Hexen 2 doesn't really have switch hunting, but in turn it has some really bizarre puzzles I'm not sure how you're supposed to figure out without a guide. Regardless Hexen's hub level system is really unique and puzzles are a natural fit to it.

Personally I've never been into the magic angle. Doom and Quake had more "kick" than games like Heretic and Hexen thanks to the shotgun approach. But maybe that's just me.

The game feels really weird by lacking a rocket launcher. Pretty much the staple weapons of the games it's trying to homage.

FUCK achievements. Making a nostalgia game with achievement pop-ups misses the point entirely.

The final boss fight could have been better. There should have been at least one more phase where you fight the professor after destroying the dome.

I used it when I was a kid. Sectors, sprites, and tags. Every sector and sprite has a pair of tags that govern their behavior--everything from flashing lights to treadmills to doors to exploding walls. draw sectors, slant them, assign tags, manually set how bright or dark they are, place sprites for decoration. It's jank and takes hours to do any of the basic lighting effects you'll see in IF, but I love it.

Rocket launchers are too cheap. Bad design. Too many games include rocket launchers.

Beat the 4th zone, 14/33 secrets. This game is really stumping me.

I've noticed that my standard for what a secret is has lowered so much that sometimes I find little areas with ammo and shit and I expect it to be a secret, but it's just part of the level and not really anything else. Doom 2016 really had pathetic secrets compared to this.

I believe it still is 7, but my level select broke and stopped unlocking past the second.

I've only beaten four of the episodes, but the problems boil down to...
1. Each episode reveals most of the enemies in the first level, which detracts from the surprise.
2. The enemies between each episode tend to share many same characteristics, e.g. you get the basic bitch melee guy, the basic bitch walking projectile guy, the basic bitch flying projectile guy, a bigger tougher projectile guy, and then maybe one wildcard and an end boss. Unlike Doom where most enemies complement each other in various ways, Amid Evil's just means more projectiles to dodge, with the rare exception like the Quake grenadier-copies found in episode 1 (which are still just used on ledges every single time, just like they were in Quake).
3. The relative simplicity of the power-up system makes encounters repetitive. You kill enemies fairly easily in your average room or hall, collect all the souls you can, and then when you're in a big arena-like room, you know it's time to activate your soul powers and wipe out the big waves easily.
4. As the episodes move along, there are more and more platforming elements which, while not particularly difficult, are tedious and seem to exist more just to show off the cool surreal architecture in the levels.
It's a solid 6/10 for me still just because the pacing is fast, the hyper-saturated color and weird architecture are nice, and the weapons are reasonably well-balanced, but the combat just isn't that interesting.

I had a vague idea what to expect based on the preview campaign but I had no fucking idea that the first half of the game will essentially be taking place in 90s cyberpunk. This is a good thing.

I dunno, Amid Evil just feels samey. The weapons don't have much of a kick and the combat feels floaty. Also, enemy variety is quite poor. Ion Maiden has you fighting a number of the same enemies over and over again as well, but at least they compliment one another. You quicky realize how fucked you are when you waltz into the room filled with grenadiers, spiders and those rocket-spamming flying things. I never had this feel of strategical enemy placement in Amid Evil.

She does have some good lines. I'm just accustomed to build game mirrors having a gag in them.

Game looks really great and I am personally a fan of the overall difficulty curve. Enemies are nearly always heard before they are seen which prevents a lot of bullshit ambushes fps games back in the day are truly fond of. Plus enemy hitboxes are actually really small but headshots are still reasonably easy to get which massively increases the viability of some weapons.

Fuck those flying drones that spam grenades at you though.

OpenGL graphics look "prettier". The textures are smoother, the lightning is improved, shit like that.
Software does not make use of GPU, so it looks worse. Of course, if you want the true "retro" experience, you will set your graphics to software and 640x480 because fuck it, it's the 90's again.
