When I say design I mean how they attack you. In 2 every enemy pretty much did the same thing, but the enemies in 1 had more varied ways of attacking you which caused you to have to react differently to each of them. It kept it more interesting.

"""gameplay""" in silent hill games is a joke. Silent hill games are based, but the only gameplay that goes down is solving puzzles. combat is just running around with tank controls and then pressing two buttons at the same time to attack, totally stationary.

It's not the most engaging thing in the world, but it's miles ahead of the newfangled carnival ride horror "games". There is a decision making aspect when dealing with the enemies. Run, fight, or sneak? Melee or firearms? SH3 adds the ability to distract enemies, while SH4 had that godawful inventory system, the attack charging thing, and the items you can equip to minimize some types of damage you receive. And different enemies are better dealt with in different ways. Some attack in groups, some do hit and run, some like to grapple you while their friends inflict damage... SH2 is the most limited one in that respect, seeing as how most enemies don't pose any threat, even at the most difficult setting. Bosses and the abstract daddies being the only exceptions.

There are no definitive answers. She isn't human in a way that we would understand it, that much is clear. But how sentient she is is up in the air. I've seen people reject the BFAW scenario as non-canon, but I tend to disagree. There it's suggested that she's very much a sentient being, albeit with very limited free will. Mary remade to fit James's needs. Sadly for her and him, his needs also include being punished.

She's probably more like a seductive Pyramid Head being used to punish James until he accepts what he did, which is why he has to watch her die. I don't really like the backstory you get for her, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense and wasn't even that fun to play IMO.

Prefering Silent Hill 1 for the gameplay is understandable. The same director also made the Siren series which are very interesting gameplay wise.
