The 2nd generation of Yea Forums lurkers came from there. But it's long sincebecome a shithole. Goons are utter faggots now and are likely a major factor in the decline of post quality as their goals are often on par with Yea Forums's many enemies, such as Resetera/Neogaf, reddit and liberal think tanks.

Second gen came from Motherless and made Yea Forums the biggest board for half a decade.

It spawned some of the most obnoxious virtue signallers in the video game community. Like, it's practically ground zero for them. They are also at fault for creating Let's Plays. Everything about the Games forum on SA was the worst the internet could offer you. Everything else was ok sometimes though.

For example, on the Nationstates forum, one of the biggest forums on the internet within a month of its creation, it was virtually unmoderated for the first 8 months until repeated ceaseless tubgirl spam forced them to get moderators. Various game forums I visited were definitely more lax about language and banter, even if a few of them still had overbearing mods. As advertising money grew, websites consolidated, YouTube became a top 10 website, smartphone users became the majority, SJW culture took off, etc you could see piece after piece being stripped away.

It can happen, 24/7 hosting is only cheap when you have a lot of people willing to pay you to host their websites. Hosting your own website (with your own servers, infrastructure) is insanely time consuming and expensive, and the number of good hosting companies is rapidly dwindling too. Once we get to the point where there's only two to three viable web hosting solutions, you can basically control what's on the internet pretty easily.
