I am buying a Nintendo switch for this game...

I am buying a Nintendo switch for this game. I haven’t watched or played any Pokemon game since pokemon red on my game boy color when it released. I have no idea what I’ll be getting into.

Nothing user, you'll find out in due time

Why won’t you be buying it

Tell him what? If he hasn't played any pokemon game since Red and Blue, it will probably blow him away, cause it will still have way more things to do than an 8 bit Gameboy game.

Yes but if he decides "Hey I really like this" and goes back to play the older games then he'll never feel this same hype again.

Figured that much but what is that user you’re replying to alluding towards? Is it a downgrade from the last few releases? Have they removed anything major?

Ok user if you won't tell him then I will. I can't let him suffer blindly like this, it hurts to watch.

Please tell me user

Erm
Are you sure you want to drop $60 for this.
There are people in china who would love $60 that didn't end up in the trash you know.

I bought let's go because I was thinking "oh this is just the low effort cash grab so what if it looks like a 3ds game and it's another remake of gen1 and should be pretty comfy at least"

And it was. But when they revealed sword and shield and showed off what the game looked like and how shitty the graphics were and the pokemon didnt even follow you anymore, I realized how much of a fucking cuck I was for actually believing in them for the mainline game. Now the dynamax shit is another shitty gimmick that nobody will like just like z moves in sun and moon, and of course the big thing with them removing pokemon. It's just all fucking lazy. Even the box art looks like fucking trash. And I defended this company ever since they started getting shit back in 2013 cause at least the games were still kind of fun. (Even if they started making the games braindead easy with X and Y) And sword and shield will probably be okay in the fun department too. Most pokemon games are. But I just cant defend this laziness anymore. The games have been on a decline quality wise since x and y and even though I enjoyed the Y/OR/Moon games, they werent the glory days of diamond and pearl. Not even close. And it's just getting worse and worse

I don’t know what a lot of this shit means since I haven’t gotten into a pokemon game since red but i can sense your disappointment. Do you think a newcomer since the 90s would enjoy it either way?

I don't get why every gen has to be them adding a big new feature. Obviously it's not like it's a new thing (Abilities, Physical/Special split) but I thought megas were awesome and a great way to (try to) keep Pokemon competitive who weren't really the best.
I dunno, maybe an opinion thing but I think Z-Moves and Dynamax look boring. Not a bad addition, they're more whatever, but just boring.
But I also didn't get far enough in Sun to actually get a Z-Move so what do I know

If you're okay with the piss-easy difficulty thats present in all of game freaks new pokemon games, you'll probably like it. Especially coming from gen 1. If they dont add any more casual BS abilities, moves, etc, then the online matches can be extremely addictive and breeding and trading online are super fun. Honestly, if you dont know any better, you'll probably end up liking the game a lot. The only people who are fed up with it are the people like me who used to buy pokemon every new generation.

More than anything I'm sick of them adding cool new shit into a game and never seeing it again afterward. Instead of building upon their previous successful features they just start from scratch every gen. You could argue that that keeps the games from getting stale yet the new features are so often total shit that that's not really the case.

if you havent played a pokemon game since red then theres gonna be a shit ton of pokemon you done know and will not feel anything for because its post poke-mania era mons

Not that user, but you're probably better off playing what's typically regarded as the best Pokemon games (Emerald, Platinum, HGSS, BW2) or getting into another monster catching/battling series altogether (Shin Megami Tensei, Yokai Watch etc).
Ever since Pokemon hit the 3DS, Pokemon games have gotten incredibly handholdy and on-rails to the point where routes are just straight lines and they even cut out dungeons last gen. The developers have gotten very fond of not letting you explore and bombarding you with NPCs that stop you every five minutes to give you items or tell you some trivial shit. And judging from the trailers, Sword and Shield is looking to be more of the same barring the one "open" area that they probably won't even let you fully explore until you beat the main story.
I don't know what you liked about the original games, but they were relatively hands off and relatively open with actual level and area design. If you're expecting that but better, then you're out of luck.

The biggest concern (especially for basically a brand new player) is that the games are going to be piss easy. There's no way to say exactly how Sword and Shield will be, but if the previous two generations are anything to go by, expect to be able to steamroll a large amount of content in the game. That might not mean much coming from Red/Blue, which were kind of the same, but it does mean the game you pick up is probably not going to have very interesting battles.

Also, expect a lot of cutscenes and possibly forced tutorials. Pokemon seems to love their tutorials recently - not about important stuff like IV variance or abilities or physical/special split, but stuff like "this is how you catch a pokemon, let's do this for three minutes" or "this is how to use a potion, select it from your bag and let's use it." Maybe that will be less in Sword/Shield, but recent games haven't been encouraging. There's also quite a number of cutscenes, and you're expected to follow along on the story and keep interacting with characters to be given access to the next area - it's been happening since Gen3, and it's really been pushed since Gen5, so that's basically a guarantee.

Other than that, have fun I guess. The games should have a lot of new pokemon for you to pick up and screw around with, just remember that "Gotta Catch 'em All" hasn't been a tagline for a few generations because you won't be catching all 800+ pokemon in a single game, even ignoring the event-restricted ones.

That's a terrible idea. Don't buy a console just to play a Pokemon game that's probably going to be disappointing at least. Apparently, a lot of the Pokemon aren't even going to be programmed into the game, which is ridiculous, because that's been the standard for the series and it's very much possible on a technical and financial level.

Literally the exact same thing but with modern graphics and more linear
Don't. If you want to play a newer Pokemon game, play Emerald or Platinum.

Go ahead and buy if it looks good enough to you, ignore these spergs
