Skyrim is easily defensible with it's natural borders. It's the toughest land to invade by far. (Outside of the Black Marsh)
Nords are also the best warrior race to combat magic. That's why for all their races existence they have slaughtered elves, a magic reliant race.

"The entire world" is the Empire, Argonia and Hammerfell vs. The Aldmeri Dominion. The Empire and Dominion are at each other's throats and Skyrim will side with the Empire if the Dominion becomes a threat.

How are the Dominion supposed to invade Skyrim? By defeating the Empire first? Skyrim will fight alongside the Empire. By sea? It's a long way, the Sea of Ghosts is dangerous, their supply lines would be vulnerable to Redguard and Breton pirates and the Dominion navy getting tied up in the invasion would allow the Imperial Navy to take control of the southern seas.
