I think Doom has spoiled me in terms of secrets. I'm used to just looking for shit like misaligned textures, flickering consoles, and listening for walk over triggers. Compared to Doom, a lot of the secrets here are cunning as fuck.

Much later in the stage there is a tight set of jumps you can use to climb high. This route will eventually take you to the area. You will need some movable item to boost you for the first jump. I won't spoil you further.

I'm almost done, so far this game doesn't have the same highs as Blood, but it's the most consistent build game to date, and probably my second favorite. Biggest flaw is that I think it takes a little too long to start to get complicated in terms of enemy encounters, you spend 2/3 hours shooting basic mooks before more dangerous people show up. And the lack of gear resets like how the episode structures function means it easy to build up a lot of resources and never really have to manage them, Fortunately you can also play individual chapters to solve that, so it's not a huge issue.
Blood > IF > Douk > SW

Thats a good way to put it. There arent any outright BAD levels like Duke or Blood, everything is solid the whole way through. But not many levels are truly great in terms of layout + encounter design.

Most of the games are made the way they are for a reason, standard duke movement and level design is the default. AI behaves like Pigcops. Weapons are just sprites that shoot bullets.

Sadly, there's no Freedoom alternative to EDuke32 yet. Your best chance is learning CON code outright and use Duke3D as a placeholder, and learn how to map using the editor. Also get some various tools.

You can get a lot done, but you have to plan things out really well before implementing them.

Why are people saying this game doesn't give you enough ammo? I've' been swimming in that shit since the end of the third zone. As long as you rotate what weapons you'll use you'll never have any kind of ammo problems.

Fuck, I was able to use the grenade launcher, Bowling Bombs, Ion Quiver, and Clusterpucks as primary weapons in the last two areas because the game shat out so much ammo for them.

Idk what difficulty you're playing but my problem is actually with how low the caps for ammo are. I was playing very conservative with my ammo and I end up finding secrets and I can't pick up anything because I've been saving my ammo and the ammo caps are so low. Especially for like the SMG's, you burn through the ammo super fast for how low the max is.

The trick there is to use the single SMG. It's more accurate, has a shorter reload, and is still likely to set something on fire.

They don't find secrets. It's as simple as that.

This is actually a bigger problem for me. SMG cap being 250 means that I never dual wield them. I can always find caches, but why would I go back for one?

Why the hell would I want to play a build engine game in motherfucking 2019?

Yeah I never dual wield and i still think the ammo cap is way too low. I'm sure within a month or so there will be mods to add other build engine weapons into the game, which i think will make a repeat playthrough a lot more interesting.

Also I love the Loverboy but I think it's a little stupid that the starter pistol is one of the best weapons in the game, since you can basically use it as a sniper rifle in the large open areas with the right click mechanic.

I actually only played douk for the first time a couple of years ago, I was a consolebabby raised by the GC and then a doomkiddy when I built my first PC. Douk is still a masterclass videogame to this day without any kind of nostalgia goggles, the fact that it's third on my power ranking is testament to just how good build shooters are

I'm hoping that mappers can push the encounter design a little further, because there's no fundamental problems with enemy variety, they just aren't mixed up enough

Is gggman right and the 3rd difficulty is too hard? I always find the third difficulty in classic FPS games to be just the right balance of challenge and fairness, like Hard in Quake and Quake 2, where Nightmare in those games just breaks certain things most of the time.

A powerful starting pistol is a thing in classic FPS games.

Duke 3D's pistol is your sniper rifle because it secretly has auto aim built into it, making most of your shots hit at any distance if you're firing at an enemy.

I found Shadow Warrior to be the hardest Build game. Lots of guys with explosive weapons, suicide bombers, and that invisible ninja that can fuck you sideways. Blood was not that hard for me. I did play it more so that's probably the reason, and so I got pretty good at it. I probably died a bunch at beginning when I started playing and just don't remember. Been playing a lot of those 3 build games the last year and half anticipating this.

This doesn't even explain how you have to divide the room up even more to even DO This kind of lighting.Like you need to make the exact shape of the shadow, and then darken that area.

With Blood I quickly found out which weapons to use against certain enemies and what weapons to use in certain scenarios. When I very first started playing Blood I was crutching the shotgun way, WAY too much. I learned though how much better the tommy gun is in a lot cases. With SW I haven't quite got it down yet. Basically I just need to spend more time playing it.

Cultural Divide, I couldn't open the bars blocking a heavy armor, explosives and one of the switches for a big secret. The colored switches didn't do anything.

I've never used the build engine, but if I had to guess they're probably the radius of triggers or noises or some such.

It was actually revolutionary for how easy and simple it was. I made my first duke map when I was 8. All my friends and I fucked around with this editor. It was like drawing on graph paper. Easy as fuck. You can instantly switch between 2d and 3d. Meanwhile for doom mapping you had to compile the whole fucking map again, then load it up in the game to see if what you made looked right. And you couldn't preview anything in 2d mode.

Nowadays doom, wolf3d, quake, all have easier editors - shit like trenchbroom is really easy, and all you newfaggots are spoiled by unity and unreal and copypasting assets and randomly generating terrain and copy pasting entire spiral staircases and shit. Yeah, build was really simple to get started with because you could just draw the level out. Details could come later. You could also see pretty much exactly what your level would look like at any time.

Obviously baking light and shadows is convenient, but the downside is you have to guess what will look good, then wait for everything to calculate the bake, only to find out it looks like shit. Even today this can take significant time.

What does the charging string do on the bow?

It's alright, not the worst out there. The grenade launcher part of it is what you'll probably be using the most. The revolver is super satisfying though.

Hold down altfire. After a short charge it fires a spread of bolts. If you hold it down for a few seconds, it will unleash a continuous fury of such bolts until it needs to reload. Very good for bosses.

I find it's pretty fun to use. It's got a nice and chunky pump animations. The game lets you do headshots, which makes it a ton of fun when you decap a guy or even make him explode into giblets with a headshot.

It sounds good and feels good to use, but it's still a single target gun that can't just clear out low level mooks in one blast like the Super Shotgun.

I think it's already oversaturated, the only ones I've actually enjoyed are Ion Fury & Amid Evil, Dusk, Project Warlock, Hedon and some of the others didn't do much for me

Dusk felt more like a cargo cult version of a classic FPS game than something following in the footsteps of Doom, Duke, and Quake. The IM guys managed to nail the feeling of being an old school FPS a lot better than Dusk did.

Hedon is really gud, just finished it yesterday. Wish I had found out about it earlier

Depends. Original Blood in BloodGDX runs a billion times better than Fresh Supply, and is more vanilla accurate IIRC, but Fresh Supply has pretty good netplay.

A secret level is actually hidden behind playing a piano to a metronome. Not activating it, but actually playing a fucking piano, cause you can hit all of its keys
