If they focused down on the solo adventures and then had 1 big adventure where the come together at the midway point and they all interacted at that point it could have worked but the way it is now is that you pick one then you meet up with more then you have to do their solo things that last only a small amount of time. Even after these they hardly fucking talk so it may as well just be your character and no one else.

Fucking this. I think the biggest let-down players have is when they finish their starting character's first chapter and realise their character has become a soulless mute until their next chapter.

All they had to do was make you play everyone's chapter 1 first ending with all eight converging on one location and agreeing to join forces (like how Wild Arm 3 starts), then they could have gone ahead with the knowledge that every character was present so they could have some fucking real dialogue going on at all times during the rest of the game.
