I've been describing it as a "shift".
Pokemon designs aren't any worse, but they aren't any better; they're just different and theeeeuuuhhhhh visual aesthetic or design sensibility has shifted and dramatically changed from what it once was. I think it's been almost 20 years? At least two decades lets say, since Pokemon was still in it's initial phase of design with Gen 1 & 2 (who were put together by the same people).

But now you've got way more people contributing, way more media influences, and even just the original artist: Ken Sugimori, doesn't even work in pencil, pen, and water colours anymore.
I remember the original intention they had behind Pokemon designs is they wanted iconic creatures (not characters) that children could easily remember AND draw, but if I had to make a guess: everyone is kind of interpreting that different, plus how many years they've had to interpret that.

I'm actually not against 'object mons': they have a place in Pokemon and they've been there from the very start. They're a legitimate niche, but if I had to criticize James' work it's that some of his designs are far too literal.

Trubbish line, Klefki, the first stage of Honedge, the Sand Castle, and the Metal!NotDitto are all great object mons, but the others are... Either dumb, too deliberate, or just awkward.

I find his most egregious design to be the gear creature. It's just.. Too much. It's overcompensating in a way? Like, it feels completely out of place in a way that's difficult to describe, but entirely instinctive? Compare the gear thing to magnemite for example: they're both steel, they're both 'inorganic', they're both hovering kind of magnetic thingies.
I dunno, maybe it's just me and somebody fucking loves the gear thing, but to me it's too literal and that's James' design problem.

The complaint people always make is that new Pokemon don't have the old rocky/scaly dinosaur skin but most of the Pokemon that looked like that weren't popular, and most of the popular Pokemon didn't look like that. I would say probably 70% of the most popular pokemon were just cute animals and then probably 20 of the remaining 30% were fantasy monsters like Scyther or Gengar. No one likes the nidoran line, no one likes the ryhorn line. Kanghaskhan is in the middle of popularity I'd say. Diamond and pearl also added a bunch of dinos and no one gives a shit about them.

At this point I find myself caring less and less because of what SnS is doing. I'm not buying the games because of the dex thing.
There's been 2 designs I genuinely liked out of the new species (not including alt forms) revealed and there hasn't been a single of my favorite type revealed. When it is I bet it'll be the billionth butterfly or moth. But I'm not really upset about it, because they've killed off any reason for me to stay with this shitass series, and it has nothing to do with the Pokemon designs they're revealing. Hell, I even adored the designs of things like Buzzwole and Xurkitree in gen 7 and enjoyed even the "worst" of the 3DS games, but that's done now.
