you get more freedom to customize your units since weapons aren't tied to class. The story is one of the better in the series and definitely one of the best out of the most recent ones. Maps are awakening tier and we're getting 2 higher difficulties patched in later.

People compare it to persona, but it's really blown out of proportion. Pretty much everything in the game has it's roots in previous games in the series in one way or the other.

The only more or less similar to persona thing borrowed is the calendar, which works completely different from the persona games.

Tea parties are completely optional and completely unnecessary unless you want to recruit other people to your class. You also only get married right at the end of the game and, again it's optional. You don't even have to bother pairing up other units since they can't get married.

Plus the tea parties can hardly be considered dating since you can do it with any character (included the ones you can't marry).

It just didn't matter that much even if units were blatantly unbalanced in older games like FE6. Growths were unreliable, roles were narrow, and availability was enough of an issue that you'd often use objectively trash units for good reason rather than just as part of some gimmick set up.
Units are objectively more balanced in modern FEs, but there's less incentive to use the bad ones due to changes in the game direction.
