Robot fiction has always had a non-binary (if that's what it must be called) bent to it, for incredibly obvious reasons. Battletech alone has been around since the 80's, decades before that term even existed.
And shit like hair and eyes color aren't immune to the need to fit into a game's artstyle. It's more important to use the game's natural color pallette than have OCs that stand out too much. And that's a 2-way street for other games as well.
