budget in game dev includes technical and hardware capabilities. the ass is literally twice the amount of polygons of a regular character.

Near a Tomato is a weird one. The character models and animations especially are top tier, but the environments are just terrible.

I know it's unfair and lots of people love it but I really think Hollow Knight looks ugly as sin with it's overly simplistic flash game look and the game is extremely muted to the point where most scene are nearly monochromatic, it's just a visual style I despise.

I honestly don't mind stuff like this at all. But it might be because I emulate PS1/PS2 games all the time and most of the PC games I play are 5-10 years old. I generally stopped being impressed by advances in graphics around Crysis 1 and I'd be more than happy with new games coming out in a PS2 style.

I feel this all the time and it makes me sad that it's not the status quo. If every games maximum fidelity was like FFXII or early-mid 2000s PC games I'd be so happy.

While I agree meat boy is also ugly and looks like a shitty flash game (same goes for binding of Isaac) they also generally more than one dominate color in a scene at a time. What really turned me off from hollow knight was that near monochromatic look they were going for, you go from the dark blue tinted room to the dark brown tinted room to a slightly different shade of dark blue tinted room.

So while I'm not going to defend how it looks I would rank it higher than hollow knight just because it wasn't afraid putting more than one color on the screen at a time.

No doubt, but I don't think we've had another leap in visual fidelity from any game with that same wow factor that Crysis had and I fear we never will.

I started gaming on the NES, when SNES hit I was floored by F-Zero and again by Star Fox, I was floored by Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid, I was floored by Unreal 1, I was Floored by HL2 and Doom 3, and then I was floored by Crysis but even since then it's felt a lot more incremental. Maybe it's just part of getting older is things don't wow you like they used to.

When I look at the PS1/PS2 library I often wonder how nice it would have been if all technological progression in computers after lets say 1996 slowed by a factor of 2 so we had the PS1 and PS2 around for twice as long. Imagine the fucking libraries of a PS1 that lasted from 1994-2004 and a PS2 that lasted from 2004-2016 with the PS3 just starting it's life now.

Still looks better than half the games in this thread. I wouldn't be complaining.
