will "phones" be the death of the console?

Probably not, but they can be a very cool and portable emulation machine when phones get more powerful

I already play several generations of console games on my phone.

I don't see why I would ever buy another console anymore, I have a PC and a mobile.

no cos touchscreen is the shittest form of controls

Nope.
Next thread.

If PCs didn't kill consoles after 20 years despite being superior in literally every single way, then phones won't.
Relax, sonybros

Hence the controller, dummy.
Do you think I play Zelda games on my mobile with the touch screen?

No because Playstation brand is associated with home console play and Samsung isn't.

think about it, our processing power is only going to go up.
it's just a matter of time til a company announces an actual gaming phone.
like the gameboy on crack

Consoles will be phased out for digital storefront/streaming apps that have controllers designed for them.

Not soon but eventually.

With remote gaming like Stadia, soon any device with an internet connection will be a gaming device.

So yeah, only LITERAL retards would buy a console at that point.

I'm an IT boffin and even I don't see how they expect to defy the laws if physics and provide real time streaming of gameplay without lag.
Just doesn't seem possible, even video streaming, which is far less complex, is plagued with constant lag and pauses

there are already 'gaming phones'

Good luck playing games with the current mobile library

There was a gaming phone, but Sony decided to stop supporting it after a year, like they do with everything else.

They're already killing them, most normalfags and kids play games on mobile

I loved my xperia play, I'd buy a new version on day one.

kids don't even buy games at this point, they just download fortnite and garbage apps

>it's just a matter of time til a company announces an actual gaming phone.
How young are you?

Because they are not defying laws of physics. Extremely low latency wireless networks starting with 5g will be a reality, at least a large portion of computing is very easy to distribute to dedicated servers with cloud computing.
I genuinely don't understand why people underestimate the level of technological progress we are at.
I work on machine learning software that builds photogrammetry meshes out of cloudpoint photo data. Things previously assumed impossible or really hard to do are rapidly becoming real.

If I had money when I was a kid I would have bought the shit out of an Ngage
Kids are dumb
Does Ngage even have any games?

Phone games will always be terrible because they're designed for women and children. No phone developer will focus on actual gamers when those giant markets exist.

>it's just a matter of time til a company announces an actual gaming phone.
*blocks your path*

>Extremely low latency wireless networks starting with 5g
So you're going to run your 100GB per hour game over mobile networks?
For something that's supposedly aimed at people too poor to own computers, this is something so expensive that Jeff Bezos will need to think twice before buying a subscription

The thing is that game developers and console developers themselves are creating cloud based systems anyway, at that point any device that can stream them can play them.

So long as games are developed for mobile with the expectation that touch screen is the default and controllers are only optional, mobile games will always be shit

It had lots of games, unfortunately they put the screen on the wrong way round so they all played like ass.

Low latency isn't enough dude. Any latency bove 50 milliseconds (25 each way) in a single player game is gonna ruin the experience. Im very doubtful we are getting less than 25 ms ping game streaming at any point in the next 10 years.

Yes, but the quality of games on old phones aren't good. Pixel brick games are way more fun like Space Impact than the early Java games developed on old phones that aren't Android yet.

Consoles will be phased out for neural virtual reality where we upload our consciousness and leave the physical realm for good

Not soon, but eventually

Honestly man I've just been using a 2 in 1 tablet and phone for years now and I doubt I'll go back.
The tablet can be a real piece of shit sometimes but everything is just powerful enough now to be viable aside from piss poor repair ratings and available parts. The batteries have to be the single biggest issue because of their designs.

Another five years and we might hit the singularity.

isnt the switch technically a phone?

it's clear that in time consoles will probably be irrelevant and you'll just be able to get games from a service, possibly be able to choose between streaming it or downloading which is what microsoft will be doing with game pass next gen

I am not talking about near 5 years, but by 2025+ that shit will be becoming more and more available.
I live in a third world country essentially, and we already have 5g ready networks while most of the country is covered in LTE with 25$ unlimited subscriptions.
The issue is that you Americans have huge fucked up monopolies and your networks are actually subpar and shit compared to most of the developed world.

It's honestly more like a laptop than a tablet if you look at its parts. It's like a small laptop with no keyboard.

Unless you can wipe it and install linux then run DOOM and pirated software on it, it's not a laptop, it's a tablet

70 milliseconds will already be enough to sway most of the casuals. It will become common to continue their games on trains, while traveling and stuff.
Of course you won't get 15 millisecond networks in 5 years time, but you don't need that to get a large portion of the market.

You absolutely can install Linux and run doom.

Prove

>wireless controller
>shitty touchscreen display
enjoy your input lag i guess

Oh.... but aren't smartphones technically small laptops anyways. Seriously, the line is so tin

The casuals aren't interested in console games to begin with. They just want casual stuff they can dump a minute into here and there. They're not paying a monthly fee for console games on their phone.

>sit down
>open phone
>pull controller out of bag
>have to repack it 3 minutes later because who the fuck actually goes outside for fun.

Grace Hopper is really a gem

I understand what you're saying I'm just saying the switchs internals are built more like laptops than typical tablets. If you hold the switch you'll immediately notice it's much thicker than typical tablets are.

why a controller? why not a built-in gamepad?

>pull controller out of bag
>to play shitty gacha waifu games and other mobileshit designed around 1-button touchscreen "controls" and chink emulators

Foldable phones will 100% have replaced conventional laptops and tablets in a bare minimum of 10 to 15 years. Phones are already as powered as most decade old laptops. There will be a device that you fold it to get a laptop, then fold it again for a phone on the go. A true all in one. Consoles are still going strong very surprisingly. Mostly because there is no other way to play high graphics games without building a fuckhuge PC. If phones or smart TVs get as powerful as consoles or PCs and they are able to just make it so you connect them to the TV and charge you a suscription for it, then they will kill the consoles, which will happen but in a decade at least.

This isn't even the video I meant to post
She doesn't even get to milliseconds, which is literally a gigantic spool of wire

The lines are starting to blur just a little bit. It's about the hardware of course but my tablet runs any OS and just about any game within the last couple years with mixed results.
(60+ FPS at native 4k on 90s games; 30+ FPS on games up to 2015 at 720 res and max settings. Doom 2016 is the cut off where I have to run standard res with mid settings. Handles most production work just fine with long rendering times but no issues with memory)

The one thing it can't handle that I've tried is batch processing on a variety of ML and modeling applications. Workarounds for some programs but it absolutely can't handle upscaling 8k+ images.

even just TVs can introduce enough input lag to shatter immersion and turn gaming from a fun and challenging experience into a completely frustrating one

I just want to point out phone emulators fucking suck. I have a pretty good tablet, which is obviously significantly stronger than most phones and all the SNES emulators I tried run like shit.

it also cost 2000 dollars and can be an unreliable pos. Just give it another five years.

I get why the phone, which is a necessity, would be convient for gaming, in theory. But I dunno man. The entire time i am just thinking about it draining my battery, and the games aren’t that fun.

With a portable gaming console, you feel no guilt while playing it. Feel free to drain the battery, it doesn’t matter.

unironically had one of these and loved it

Are they not already? These $1000 pieces of shit must be good for emulation at least.

idk, my current phone doesnt run NDS games so i dont care about gaming in there

>tfw no accordian game
>there will never be a cover shooter where you physically fold the phone

they are the death of PORTABLE consoles. Only reason the switch is doing okay is that it is hybrid.

Yeah, zoomers love snes shit

>In 10 years you'll be able to play current gen console games on your phone
>In 20 years you won't be able to play current gen PC games on your console.
Really makes you think

>will "phones" be the death of the console?

can i play mario maker 2 or dragon quest builders 2 on phones right now?

yeah, didnt think so.

There's a thread on /g/ I think (or maybe Yea Forums) a while back where someone's phone with an octacore CPU was running an early PS2 emulator at playable speeds.
(That PS2 emulator was some Chinese made gacha pos)
There's another PS2 emulator on android that's totally free but in roughly the same state performance wise. Maybe a bit slower and rougher in stability

Also had an older phone like 5 years ago that was running Dolphin just fine before their Android builds shit the bed after the developers left.
(still builds but last I checked Android Dolphin is completely broken again)

cant you literally do this?

>phones eventually get to the point of being able to run last gen games
>still doesn't matter because phones have no games but heavily monetized games as a service microtransaction filled garbage
Call me when one of these phones has fold/slide out physical buttons and actual games.

do you mean a gamepad built in on the touchscreen? no physical feedback on buttons feels like garbage for a lot of games.

parts are still big, also lol no buttons and battery life

Nintendo """"consoles"""" maybe
