At first Faith is introduced as a cliched "rebel" character that hates the police and government. But after the prologue, her sole motivation for doing all the death-defying shit in the game was to save her sister, a cop. She showed no bad blood towards her sister even though they were polar opposites on different rival factions. It showed Faith was mature even as a rebellious runner, and it gave her character a lot of nuance, since she could just disown her sister for going down a different path in life (which she did in the shit reboot).
Also she's not a mary sue, she's shit with guns and gets bested whenever she's not running.

John Marston - At times a bit vanilla, but certainly someone who knew what he wanted. Usually being principal is a shitty characteristic, but not here.
Tommy Vercetti - Absolute huge step up from claude. this guy surprised me in the contrast he provided
Luis Lopez - In my opinion the second GTA protag that comes closest to being a real character, not just a husk for all to like.
Max Payne - mainly the one from 2 stuck with me. Never been depressed aside from the zoomer type 'depression', but this felt authentic to me.
Donte - A meme to some, better than the original material to me.
Kane & Lynch - A dynamic I wish would be more common in modern vidya. Too bad the second game was shit.

I mean, Gordon Freeman is a character that stuck with me, but not because of his shining personality, obviously. Older, much more iconic than the list above, pale in comparison to modern characters.

I don't think you could really kill snake in an environment like bloodborne. Guy has the biggest arsenal, teleportation, air support, radio contacts, a PMC army at his beck and call, and supposedly the skill set of the greatest soldier mankinds ever known. Imagine how cheesable most of the game would be with a 25 round semi auto grenade launcher, fired while literally invisible, wearing ceramic and Kevlar armor with an army's worth of support. Snake isn't some kind of God, mind you, but he basically counters everything that makes bloodborne difficult, through his numbers and aoe weapons. Oh, and Leon literally cannot die, so he's probably good too.
