Retailers Point of Sales systems automatically print out the serial number on the receipt and in the database of any transaction with electronics that have them, meaning they can just look at the serial number on your system and on the receipt to tell you no.

The POS blocks the sale until the serial number is scanned. They try to make it retardproof, since they, you know, hire literal retards. It also means nearly everything over $300 (that I've seen bought, anyway) needs to be scanned twice.
Now what they might not do is try to match the serial number actually on the console itself to the one on the box. Or they might. I can't seriously imagine them turning it on and checking the settings, though, so if it was missing the sticker ....
