Almost all English voice actors are better than Jap voice actors. The problems are that simple Japanese idioms are often translated literally, which results in weird ass clunky dialogue that no English speaking human being would ever say, and that they often have to sync a seven syllable phrase in English to a 4 syllable phrase in Japanese.
The only real exception are old gruff Japanese men can deliver lines with a lot of deep bass and baritone that sounds delicious, but it usually gets translated to "Old raspy white guy" when they should have a real strong baritone black dude do it instead.

When i was kid and first game with dub came out i noticed how weird and bad english voices sound and asked my dad he told that probably the peole who voice these characters are the game programmers or their friends instead of actors and believed that for 8 years. Salaries between Japanese and American VA's are about the same. Hell American VA's get paid a more because the dynamics of this industry allow you to apply for a shit ton of available projects. The thing about the japanese VA industry is that a lot of them aren't just known for doing that, but also double as singers, idols, radio/TV personalities, etc. which is why they are so "important". Not to mention they aren't treated as "dub" actors either.
Though even then only a few of them achieve the fame of actors, comedians or other personalities.

Because Dark Soul's english VAs aren't done by some hack dubbing studio that churns out 10 dubs a month. They're being directed by the game's actual writers/directors. The presence of a director listening in on takes is so vastly underrated, but you can clearly see the difference. It's not just English dubs, nearly every dub has the same issue of lines not being as impactful or meaningful as the original because the director isn't there to tell the actors what they want out of the scene.

That's what gives From Soft's VAs the edge. English speaking VAs have talent, it's just not being used because their dub studio producer is barely reading the material and is just making sure that the take sounds acceptable. Mostly just making sure it's free of breath sounds, stutters, audio problems, etc. Meanwhile Miyazaki is sitting in on recording sessions, talking through an interpreter and giving the actors direction.

Voice actors largely work through the Actor's Guild. The guild has contract stipulations for studios that increase the pay rate for each sequel done. Most localization companies do not want to pay the fees. In some cases, the studio is forced to if there is enough outrage from fans, but in most cases, characters will get Burch'd.

While I can't verify nor do I believe that Miyazaki himself was the one overseeing the voice acting, voice directors ARE a thing and ARE the difference between a good dub and shit dub, regardless of talent. The biggest issue is when multiple characters are having a conversation (which FROM handily avoids by having spoken characters NEVER interact); you'll end up with two people speaking in completely different tones. moods, and flows because their lines were recorded independently and without the context or guidance provided by a voice director.

TV shows everywhere basically do that in all regards. For example, take any tv show that has someone playing a video game. They never are actually playing the game. It's always just a pre-recorded segment and they wildly mash the controllers buttons. Now take that and apply it to everything else in the tv show. Conversations, relationships, fight scenes. It's always got an awkward unrealistic flair to it. I think they should had used the woman voicing that one petite idol with the southern accent, this is Morgana's VA. Also I don't think Alexis Tipton was considered yet who handles a handful of Laura's characters.

Shows like the simpsons, futurama, most of what you see in kids cartoons, and in animated movies from Pixar and dreamworks all feature professional voice talent from major pro agencies.
The people you hear in “dubs” are not really pros. Very few of them will ever make the leap to professional voiceover work. It’s a nasty Cliquey circlejerk of a business and all of them have dreams of clawing there way out of sweaty conventions.

I don't really care how voice actors look. That's not important. Most Japanese actors have poor hygiene and shitty teeth, while most American actors look 30 years older and don't even attempt to keep care of themselves.

People love to give Japan the praise that they are leagues above the English voice actors but that's not so much the case.

Japanese voice actors frequently try too hard. Forced attempts to be too deep for men, or high pitched ear rape for women. Lots of excuses from people who aren't fluent in the language. But at least they try, unlike Jotaro's english VA Matthew Mercer unable to scream ORAORAORA and having Dio's VA do his battle cries.

English voice actors of course get a lot more flak in the US because duh, they speak English, so you can hear the faults. English voice actors either have this huge trouble with range or try way too hard to mimic the Japanese actors. English voice actresses putting on the fake high pitch voice somehow sounds worse than the Japanese voice actresses.

That all being said, it can be argued that a lot of the blame lies on the voice directors.

For really good English voice acting, listen to John Vickery as Lucifer in Dante's Inferno, and watch his giant dong Not a very good game but his voice acting made the entire slog of the last act worth it. Every game I have heard him in, he puts his soul into it.

Same goes for Norio Wakamoto. Even if it's a shitty piece of media, he too puts his soul into it.

Yeah it really disappointed me. I otherwise enjoyed the Part 3 dub quite a lot, especially since I thought the Part 1 and Part 2 dubs were trash(too much of a focus on accents, and the pillar men were awful).

But for an otherwise great dub I kept getting taken out of the moment when Star Platinum came out and I heard Dio's voice. It was so painfully not Matthew Mercer's voice, it ruined.

Meanwhile Daisuke Ono, being a tiny little Asian twink, can do the ORAORAORAs in real time during concerts and such.

there's a video comparing the scenes, and there's a comment in japanese that says dio sounds like he's saying "mura", which is what would happen if you focus on saying it fast rather than saying it correctly, but i'd rather if he said "useless" fast anyways

It's like how the Attack on titan dub completely redo Erin's roars(poorly I might add) because it's done by the original actor, so they got to replace it.

I clearly stated that everything is worse dubbed. I’ve watched foreign films with the subtitles since I was a kid and way before anime became a mainstream entertainment medium in the west. Dubs have always been stilted and unnatural.

Voice acting in japan is a real fucking job, simple as that. There's actual competition and need for talent. Every seiyuu worth their salt has to know how to get up on a stage and sing their asses out, among other stuff. The people dubbing vidya and and anime in your country are people who not only couldn't make it as actors but also couldn't make it as voice actors for actual american works. It can't even be compared to dub industries in other countries, as they are bigger and need to also dub all the english language material that america shits out, inevitably more talent is found there than in USA. Even ol' stinky mexico was treating anime with seriousness and professionalism back when america would only put out embarrassing gag dub level shit because ew anime so icky.
So I'm not saying japanese voicework is superior to american, I'm saying ALL voicework is superior to american.
