Who is the best video game developer and why is it Nintendo?

Because they're a platform provider and get to take credit for the work of subsidiary companies.

Nintendo are a weird one for me. They have a lot of highs but also a lot of meh. People remember the good games very fondly but tend to just forget the weak games exist. I also feel like a lot of their releases are very repetitive like: new 3D platformer with the world made out of wool or clay or something, new Mario Kart, new Mario Party, new Smash etc. It’s been a while since they did something really new or interesting. This is all just my opinion of course though and they are still far far better than the offerings of EA, Ubisoft or Activision who also just release the same stuff over and over.

The company, historically, has followed in the footsteps of Nintendo, being shadowed in ways that the average laymen perhaps fails to grasp. Whether it's a controller feature, a party game, a particular design choice, or even a livestream format, the influence is clear and the execution second-rate. The company seems to ebb and flow, never quite finding their own identity. In recent years, that identity crisis has taken root in a most strange way. The niche of the realistic, high budget, cinematic story-driven singleplayer experience is one that, on a surface level, catches the eye of critics and casuals alike. Regardless of the actual quality of these games, they have been elevated to a sort of higher social status. This manifests as an aura of inflated self (and industry) importance. To be a Snoyfag is not just to buy these games, but to buy the brand, the very image that Sony is peddling.

And yet, the industry continue to pass them by. Some of the most critically and beloved games of all time (most NIntendo properties) are oblivious to them. It hurts them, and confuses them, to see Top 10 lists peppered with media that does not even exist outside of their ecosystem. And so they writhe and squirm, like bloodworms lapping at the vestiges of filth, hoping to sup on the remnants of a crushed Movie-Game sandwich. At the end of the day, I liken them to Imgurians or 9Gaggers. They are no better than sewer people, completely unaware of the lively, bustling cities above them

No other developer has released as many good games as Nintendo. Others have made games that are better than most Nintendo games, but no company can beat them in both quality AND quantity

The only decent game from Nintendo is BotW which is just a Ubisoft clone and playable on PC.

Not that Capcom isn't normally good, but Nintendo games have never declined in quality as severely as Capcom's did from 2011 to 2017. The Wii U was a flop, but the Nintendo-developed games for it were still great.

I would argue if you average it out though Capcom comes ahead because they're consistently much better.
