why is chrono cross there
True for me nowadays. No time to waste with screaming zoomers online.

I assure you, we need multiplayer
I'd take a shitty multiplayer game over all that trash any day.
True, when you become old enough multiplayer games just become more and more pointless
It had a fantastic story, the only flaw was the fact that it had way too many playable characters when we should have only had Leena, Serge & Kid. If they simply limited the cast to 3 characters & fully fleshed them out it would be every bit as good as Chrono Trigger
Also current year multiplayer are just gambling simulators marketed to children by influencer.
Still waiting on my Panzer Dragoon Saga sequel, they fucking ended on a cliffhanger & never gave us any payoff. Fuck Sega & Nintendo
I don't think all games need stories but I don't understand people who don't want any games to have stories. Vidya is a great medium for storytelling when done properly, and you don't have to make sacrifices in terms of gameplay to tell a good story either.

i think gameplay is more important
only if the gameplay works with the story
MGS2 made use of gameplay mechanics and elements to fuck with the player which in turn made the very meta story work. that game would not be the same without elements like introducing snake and then taking him away, fucking with the codec later one, etc.
tell a story in a way that only a video game can, in other words.
I guess people just want more context in the gameplay loop and great stories often perfectly justify and complement it.
What's bottom left
>when done properly
But what game does? If you ask me the only way to do story in games properly is the story being written as the game is played. Something like the stuff in Dwarf Fortress for example.
But if the "game" is just a lazy backdrop to tell a story a book or movie could have told just as well you fucked up.
Funnily enough the only games where I was invested in the pre-written story were ones where it's almost completely seperated from the gameplay, with the player just reading it in between playing the game. Games like Morrowind or Soul Sacrifice.

Wait nope, gameplay is irrelevant
replace cross with xenogears
>stories
i just want to play the game not hear some college freshman's idea of what a deep story is
hmm would minecraft and gta be successful as a chat software or as a single player game with gameplay
really makes me think
What are you thinking about?
>top text
>bottom text
Why in the bloody hell is Chrono Cross in this picture?! Did someone mistook Chrono Cross for Chrono Trigger?
Damn never knew Sonic and Sega All Stars sold that much. I'm surprised SEGA didnt do yearly releases due to it.
Why is mother 3 there
>Discuss Yea Forums
Yea Forums is a shit hole filled with people who don't know how to use commas.
>weebshit
>great stories
>Top speech is simple and get his point across of being an unhinge crazy clown
>Bottom speech is a bunch of diatribe nonsense filled with terms that make no sense unless you play the game
agree.
Fuck the overuse of MMOs/"life-service-games"
I don't have time for long story games anymore so all I want is good gameplay now
>leena and not glenn
shit taste
>Bottom speech is a bunch of diatribe nonsense filled with terms that make no sense unless you play the game
>Character is cast out of a fundamentalist society, likely in a downwards spiral of disinllusionment that culminated in open rebellion and exile, unbeknownst to them the falsity they beheld was the result of a much larger scheme, of which the character's master or mentor was part of, but was also concerned at an emotional level towards their underling, enough to bargain with the mastermind of said scheme in favor the character.
I got that by merely reading what's there, it pretty obvious but i dont expect braindead weebs to have any basic deductive capabilities though.
Now i want to know what game that is.
This
It's all a service now. The game has no end. Modern gaming was a mistake.
OP here, wrong picture.
>thousands of hours of repeatability in good multiplayer because each session is unique and dynamic
>a few hundred AT BEST, a couple hours on average for le ebic story
if i wanted a story i'd read a book, faggot
Please delete your account
I bet you "people" think you're really creative when you say shit like this
Dude it's so obvious that pretentious image post was yours. Your quote is as pretentious as the image in question and to be honest I aint reading all that hipster shit. Shakespeare said brevity is the soul of wit for a reason. When you go out of your way to write long diatribes and use big words for no reason other than to seem smart you aint that smart. Simple storytelling triumph over complicated artsy fartsy bullshit.
It's sad but yeah, multiplayer means girls play. Girls don't play single player games, really.
>Terraria there to save the list
Absolutely based
the only multiplayer games i ever cared about were goldeneye, perfect dark, mario party and smash.
>WE CAN'T ONLY GET ONE THING, THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUNDS
OP is a retarded faggot, i do prefer single player games but still, this is stupid
Games will never have good stories because they'll always be held back by the game's main tasks.
99% of cutscenes in games can be summarized with either "Oh no monsters are attacking! Better go fight em!" Or "You have to walk to the game's next level." Not to mention that main characters in games are always self-inserts to an extent and so they'll never be given any real, interesting flaws. They will straight up never be able to compete with books and movies.
>inb4 some dumbass tries to tell me Neku is a good example of a flawed character.
I hardly even care about gameplay anymore, I think I'm turning storyfag
Sounds like something casuals would say
>It had a fantastic story which a minor NPC showed up and literally told to you in a text dump 5 minutes before fighting the final boss
GOTY of all years amirite?
Why is panzeer dragoon saga there?
People who play single player games are casuals and need to get the fuck off my board.
>They will straight up never be able to compete with books and movies.
By the same merit, books can't compete with movies, and vice versa. Each medium is it's own thing with it's own limitations and strong suits and can compete only with representatvies of that medium.
Fuck off, retard.
>MGS
How retarded must a person be to enjoy this "story"?
Repeat after me.
ONLY
GAMEPLAY
MATTERS
And only once you've nailed this you can think of having a good/great story. See FFT, Tactics Ogre, Valkyrie Profile, FFV, Half Life, Portal, Talos Principle.
If the game is shit, write a book then, don't make me lose my time with your shit.
Absolute retard opinion
>MGS2
>great story
Good joke
MGS2 has a fantastic stories, one of the best the medium has to offer.
no, we need good games
We don't need neither, what we need is great gameplay
disagree but based nonetheless
What about Planescape Torment. What about Fallout. What about Shadow of the Colossus.
SotC isn't story driven at all, it barely even has a story. It's minimalist all around but the gameplay is clearly the focus.
The lack of written or told pieces of text doesn't mean a game doesn't have it. Story is literally all there is to SotC
The story is the cherry on top that makes it a great game though, which would otherwise be just pretty good. Context is also important for gameplay.
Games like SotC and Dark Souls are the better implementation of story in game. It's there but only as a justification for the game world you're in. It marries gameplay and narrative because if it doesn't connect to what you're playing then what's the point? SotC wanted you to fight a bunch of bosses. So rather than just booting you to a boss select it made a giant cavern to explore. Why are you doing it? Well you need a central goal so they threw in a dead girl to revive. Now you have a game to play and a reason to play it and any extra is given to the level and world design for you to ponder.
No the core gameplay is very basic
The main draw of SoTC has always been the music, presentation, and atmosphere
>only flaw was too many characters
no the flaw was info dumping anything important.
the story was given to you mostly organically until you get through Choronopolis and then the ghosts of Chrono, Nadia, and Lucca as well as Miguel just make you sit through 10 minutes of text boxes to tell you like the most important shit regarding the story.
and then they do it again literally right before the final boss.
