We all know it can never be as good as SSOC.

A-life basically allows any entity within the same map as you to act radiantly depending on their status. Finding travelling loner squads getting stuck in fights with mutants and then running in to help so that you can fortify the area they were going to is some of the best and most subtle stuff in any game I've ever played. The thing about A-life too, is that it was significantly cut back from what was planned. Initially, there was going to be global a-life which included much more parameters such as NPC's money and inventory which they would do certain tasks to try and improve. Some mods re-enable this stuff and it makes for some pretty glorious freeplay experiences

Yeah and its one of the fundamental cores that makes Stalker what it is, if they want the game to be a successor they will need a dedicated team of slavs only working on AI code
