As of August 14th Hero is banned at competitive events run by SASC.
After deliberation and plenty of discussion we have concluded that Hero’s design as a character is fundamentally dependant on randomness to the point that it is not reasonable in a competitive environment.

RNG permeates every element of Hero's design, from spell selection to random critical hits and hocus pocus effects. While randomness has to varying degrees always been present in competitive games and other Smash games, Hero is so dependent on randomness that it cannot be 'played around' or accounted for in competitive play. The argument is similar to the reason why items are banned in competitive play.

Additionally, even other random effects in the game, such as G&W's Hammer or Peach's turnips, still require the player to connect with the move. Although it is not a central issue, many of Hero's random tools, such as magic burst edgeguards, unblockable kamikazees or psych up critical shield breaks are frequently unavoidable and decide whole stocks. Random kill power and mobility buffs as well as free Zoom recoveries have no counterplay and can significantly effect the outcome of a match.

We want to emphasise that this ban is not because hero is too strong, but because he is anti-competitive. We believe that tournaments are meant to provide an opportunity for players to demonstrate their skill and that, as a general rule, the player who plays more skilfully should emerge victorious. Hero's design has a very strong potential to de-emphasise player skill which isn’t fair for those who work hard to improve their abilities for competition.

I never used to like stage bans but really looking at it, some stages just give a big advantage to certain characters. Players like Maister have been getting good results. He has a lot of different options with his gimmicks, and his recovery is possibly one of the best in the game if not the best. Safe out of shield, can fall fast as fuck with down air to avoid ledge guards, big vertical recovery with up+b and can float for a bit with it. He's incredibly fun. Plus, if you get someone with his hammers that stick you in the ground, side smash is a guaranteed kill at relatively low percents. People just needed time to figure out how to use his kit.

I think the comparison to other characters is apt because while RNG permeates Heroes move set more the results are the same. There isnt really a difference between getting a crit with Hero and getting a lucky hammer with G&W both de emphasize skill which according to them is the complaint.

Characters with RNG, including crits exist in other games. RNG does not make a character inherently uncompetitive, because a new skill comes from being a hyper reactive player who can maximise the potential on whatever type of hit you get. Most players struggle with using the hits they get normally, but knowing the effect might not be the one you want means the player needs to be very flexible. Especially when it can change up your combo routes.

The only parts of Hero's kit that can be considered "broken" above and beyond other RNG characters are:

Arsene is considered a weak far as recovery goes. Its why everyone not Leo gets fucked up trying to get back on stage with him. If you watch Leo games, the reason people get fucked up by Arsen is that they shit themselves and start running the fuck away from him the moment he pops out. Players that challenge him do far better and lose for fuck ups on their part.

With that said, Joker could use some tweaking but isn't anymore bullshit than wolf/snake or peach who has zero risk all reward turnips imo.

To me all his stuff seems like in general he is a below average character, if he gets lucky at the right time he gets access to above average moves and if he gets extremely lucky at the exact right time (with enough MP) he can do something crazy. I never understood this. Are smash players so braindead they can only learn to play one character ? Allow all stages, pick you character based on MU and the stage itself. Bans should be reserved for something over centralising, where your options against it become so limited that they alone define the meta. A really strong character might suck some of the fun out but if it isn't just pick them or their one counter pick otherwise you lose then don't ban. Of course something actually breaking the game or creating a situation where the match is stalled with no way to carry on should go as well. As that just makes the game gain a lead and then run to where it is actually impossible to touch you.

RNG is a complex one. It is preferable when you can react to it, you can see them go for their random move and what they have pulled out. You also have unreactable stuff where sometimes they just get a better move. But if it is a low odds move and they still have to play well to use it then you have to take in on the chin sometimes that is alright. Especially when there are some big flaws to that move.

Under this Hero seems fine. He has not proven to be centralising or game breaking. His spells system has a lot of flaws and limits. Even if he gets the right thing at the right time, it has a lot of start up and you can see what he is going for. It is a system you can play around. Some of those spells are on the line but the mp limit and how he can screw himself over make up for that a bit. Which really leaves crits as the take in on the chin kind of annoyance, so maybe them being lessened in some way would be acceptable.

In classic FPS tournaments, like Quake, map choice is core to 1v1 meta. Some players practice some maps more than others and will constantly mind game each other, sometimes even picking a map neither of them like to keep the opponent off balance. Why would you want to remove something like this?

I don't know how other fighters go but in smash most follow the idea that you'll be better focusing on one character instead of splitting attention among two. Outside of the PT players there are a few that do have backups but barely make top 10.

Stages are banned because in a high stakes money game you will play the cheapest to way to win. Other stages are just redundant and fuck up the strike system which does take MU knowledge to know how to use.

Right now a top tier player has to know how fight ~25-40 of the cast members least they get out played. And depending on region some people may be out of luck as X character is underrepresented.

If you pressure Hero he won't even be able to use his spells without just randomly casting a spell at split second, so the player could accidentally use kamikaze or some other useless ability.

Have you ever tried to read something along with someone who has control over the screen? Especially if that someone doesn't purposely let you read it? You'll never keep up with them.
You can't really react well on the down B and read the options, because the other player will have half a second of an advantage of reading before you even focus your eyes there. By the time you read the options, the attack might already come out. Which then means it's pretty much pointless to track the spells.
It's true to expect the worst possible outcome, but most options aren't even that good for hero. Mostly because the user has to look away themselves, which is the single worst thing you can do. Plus due to that check you have to do, the frame data of that move is pretty atrocious. The rest of hero's moveset isn't much better.

I'm not sure if the hero's RNG and wonkyness deserves a ban. Sure it's really weird to play as and to play against, but even then the down B seems to be more gimping yourself outside of the buffs you can get. If you actually try to use an attack with it, you're probbaly a lot more likely to get punished even by heavies.

I would agree if you said this a few years ago but since Gen 5 Gamefreak has been buffing and nerfing old moves, abilities and Pokemon. TPC have been pushing VGC( the official competitive format) heavily in recent years. A lot of newer pokemon have abilities or moves designed around double battles which is what the VGC uses.

Someone's done nothing but practicing reading the menu, and in a completely pressureless environment the fastest he could parse through the menu, find something useful, and then pop it, was still around 30+ frames. Its impossible to open the menu raw in neutral without getting your shit pushed in.

There's a resistance to the current list of stages. Some people want there to at least be trial for some stages and hazards to see if they can be legalized (wuhu island being the most prominent because of one autist), but event organizers can't be assed to do anything about it.

Faust has items that can hurt him and can even heal his opponent, and can even get minimum damage on his super or even self-harm if the opponent has good eye genetics. However, regular meteorite carries me so hard. Faust also can't insta gimp unless you get eldritch RNG, but even then the opponent just has to block and they got plenty of time to block.
