I liked blood vials more than I liked estus. I didn't like how they get more expensive as you progress, so it basically incentivizes you grinding the fuck out of them/echoes early on to cap your stash out.

The problem with them is that repeated the same mistake Demon's Souls made: The game gives you way too much healing, since enemies frequently drop them and you can carry up to 20 at a time (24 with runes).

Yes and no. After an early point onward you get far less blood vials, not counting making excessive use of Chalice Dungeons for shitloads of echoes to make a joke out of the cost of items.

It usually takes 2-2.5 Vials to heal what a single fully upgraded Estus does. Early game Vials are way more healing than Estus, but those Vials can and will dry up on the first run while you always have a set amount of Estus on respawn.
Vials with a cap at like 20 lets you not feel bad for getting hit on the way to bosses, because there is always ways to get a few to stock right back up to 20. BB also has the runes to heal on visceral attacks which to me was broken as fuck against Maria and even Orphan
