Don't always look at the bullets. Look at the empty spaces next to your character and go through there

Just keep practising and figure out what works best for you. I couldn't even tell you what I do because I don't really think about it. I beat 17 earlier today on my very first attempt and some patterns clicked and made sense immediately even though I was completely unfamiliar with them, mostly because I have a feel for some of them after playing the other games. It really boils down to practice, at least when it comes to normal mode. Playing on lunatic is completely alien to me so I have legit no idea how much of it is memorization at this level.
I'd recommend tackling normal mode with any of the first three windows games and working your way up, 6 and 7 are forgiving enough and 8 throws bombs and lives at you like they're nothing.

Here is a quick rundown on difficulty settings

>easy
Useful for absolute first timers. You can use this to get used to the controls and mechanics. If you die a lot here, it's because your brain is still adapting to the psychological warfare of bullet hells.
>normal
The standard challenge. Here lies the big crunch where a lot of people drop the game because the learning curve becomes much slower. Rather than learning what the buttons do, you must now learn the different techniques such as streaming, micro dodging and bombing at the right times. If you have enough patience you will eventually get that sweet 1cc, which for some people is enough, but others are so hooked at this point that they will master normal and desire a higher level of challenge.
>Hard
Welcome to the salty spitoonn, this is where the boys become men. At this point there is no excuses, only training and improving your skills until you finally make it. If you master this difficulty you can safely call yourself a veteran, you will be like those muscular gym dudebros who enjoy spending their free time appreciating each other's gains (except only half as gay). Am I the only one who finds some of the stages (before the boss) stupid difficult? I usually can't get through stage 5/6 on normal without bombing.

NUmetal wolf make your 2hu edgy and boosts your focused shot
american eagle makes you 2hu arrogant and boosts your unfocused shot
not like the otters make you 2hu a dork and boosts your spellcards
all of them make your gathered spirits boost last longer if the type matches

Eagle: better unfocused shot
Otter: bomb becomes 3 times better and you get 4 bombs instead of 3
also the respective roar mode is even longer (if you collect 3/5 wolves as wolf the roar last a few extra seconds)

Wolf = stronger focused shots (shooting while holding shift)
Otter= stronger bombs (pressing x)
Eagle= stronger unfocused shots (without holding shift)

Also, filling your bar with at least 3 of the type of animal pickups of your selected animal will give you a hyper mode with (strong focused shots/ bullet clearing aura/ wide area shots).
You can collect an animal different than yours but the duration will be shorter
