The thing that brings loverboy back down to Earth is the long, and frequent, reloads and relatively low ammo cap. It dishes out respectable damage and that's great to have a weapon that's never irrelevant. You can stick to it if you want, but you have alternatives. SMG and shotgun are both workhorse class weapons and you get a decent amount of ammo for them. At least, in the old demos. I'm not far in the core game.

This kind of gameplay is good. There are a lot of players who play modern FPSs and yet they always go back to the classic ones (me, for example). These games have several peculiarities that have been lost over time.
One advantage they is that their enemies are predictable, meaning that a focused player can handle dozens of them at the same time, even when surrounded. You need to have a quick reaction, decide who to attack first while moving to avoid being attacked. You need to consider enemies that are not in your field of vision, but you know what they will do anyway, so you can avoid them if you play well. It's very rewarding and immersive. Modern games hardly have situations like this, Doom 2016 itself can not "emulate" that same action.
This type of gameplay has not "evolved" because modern games have abandoned it, except perhaps for Serious Sam.

Yes. Because enemies are predictable, you can take control of the situation, even when you're facing 20 at the same time.
When you are in a situation where you cannot make mistakes and the enemies are many, your margin of error is tiny and if you are not focused and considering all the enemy positioning and arena design, you will not succeed. A game that forces you to stay focused is immersive.
In Ion Fury, the third level, if I'm not mistaken, which is right after you jump into the sewer pipe, is just like that. An open arena with enemies on all sides and heights. On the hardest difficulty is a very rewarding experience.

the level design is far above anything made in the current year, the only people who makes stuff like this nowadays are modders, and it does stuff with the build engine that wouldn't have been possible when the engine was still new.
As for why it doesn't have fancier graphics, publishers doesn't want to spend that kind of money on such a project, complex level design is tossed aside for better graphics and presentation.

Its weird that your health above 100 actually drains over time, like in Quake. Quake did that for multiplayer balance and because the bonus health item gives you 100 extra. Thats really not necessary when all you get in IF is little +1 bonuses.

I got to the GDF HQ and actually had to stop myself for playing further because I enjoyed it too much and didn't want to beat it too fast. I also watched the reviews beforehand and I have to think that people like LGR or Ggmanlives are fucking casuals - the "very hard" difficulty (the one below Maximum Fury) isn't hard at all past the beginning of the first level if you don't waste ammo.

All in all the level design is fucking incredible, feels pretty cyberpunk which is not really what I expected given the early access levels.

It's great. Well worth $20. Great maps, combat feels great, genuinely challenging on Ultra Viscera and a campaign longer and better paced than Duke, Blood or Shadow Warrior. If I have any complaints, it's about the lack of weapon variety and the scarcity of some of the ammo types. Multiplayer is coming eventually.

Played it non stop yesterday, I haven't had so much fun with a game in ages, I am really looking forward to see what these guys are up to next, the first Bombshell game was a disappointment, but this is return to form if I've ever seen one, it's fucking flawless so far.
