It's a way to punish you for playing sloppy and an incentive no to get better.

Only those that want everything handed to them want game overs removed

I only saw the thumbnail for the video on game overs, (I really should unsubscribe as I don't watch most of his vids).
I kind of agree.

Lives and game overs are a relic of arcades and the NES where games were designed to eat your quarters and be artificially lengthened through difficulty and forcing players to start over fron the start as they could normally be beaten in under an hour and the games lacked a save feature.

Lives and game overs generally lost all of thier meaning by the start of the 5th gen. At worst a game over involves having to start from the start of the level which only means you lose a few minutes of progress. They're not even a significant inconvenience even on the rare chance that you get one. Games should adopt more significant and impactful ways of punishing mistakes and/or rewarding skillful play as opposed to having to restart a level after a dozen attempts.

For linear games, which are pretty much the only ones with a life system, a more conservative use of checkpoints or thier complete removal would make skillful play more important. If that were the case, then I would recommend having shorter levels but increase the number to compensate.

Lives and Game Overs work really well in classic platformer style games. Look at Mega Man 11, they are a great way to add difficulty and require you to have at least a basic level of mastery of a stage to beat it (assuming you don't buy lives like a pussy).

That said, most other genres of games could do without them.
